One of the most magical wildlife encounters in Hawaii — and indeed the entire world — awaits on the Big Island’s manta ray night dive and snorkel tours. Every evening, giant Pacific manta rays with wingspans up to 14 feet glide gracefully through the dark waters off the Kona coast, drawn by underwater lights that attract the plankton they feed on. Snorkelers and divers float at the surface or hover on the seafloor as these gentle, intelligent creatures perform their breathtaking underwater ballet just inches away. The Big Island’s manta ray tours are run by expert marine naturalists who share fascinating insights about manta ray behavior, biology, and conservation while ensuring a safe and utterly unforgettable experience.

Yes. Manta rays are completely harmless filter feeders that pose no danger to humans. Guides provide thorough safety briefings and all necessary equipment including wetsuits, lights, and flotation boards.
Basic swimming ability is helpful, but flotation boards are provided for non-swimmers on snorkel tours. Scuba dive tours require certification and prior diving experience.
While no wildlife encounter can be 100% guaranteed, Kona’s manta ray site has an extremely high sighting success rate — often above 90%. Operators monitor conditions and choose optimal locations nightly.
Manta ray tours typically depart at dusk (around 5:30–6:30 PM) and last 2–3 hours. The mantas arrive as darkness falls and the underwater lights attract their plankton food source.
Bring a towel, change of clothes, and reef-safe sunscreen. Wetsuits, masks, snorkels, and lights are provided. An underwater camera or GoPro is highly recommended.
