Welcome to Kauai Luaus

Kauai has two luaus, and they could hardly be less alike. One is a beachfront buffet show on Kalapaki Bay, minutes from Lihue Airport. The other is a four-course dinner inside a 1930s plantation estate, followed by an award-winning theatrical production staged in its own pavilion. Choosing between them is less about which is better and more about which kind of evening you actually want — and on an island with only two, that decision matters more than it would on Maui or Oahu.

Drums & Dances of Polynesia — Kalapaki Bay, Lihue

Held at the Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort on the crescent of Kalapaki Bay, Drums & Dances of Polynesia is the island’s most family-friendly luau and by far the easiest to reach — it is the closest luau to Lihue Airport, which makes it the sensible pick for a first night or a last one. The evening runs three hours. It opens with a fresh lei greeting and a pre-show hour of live Hawaiian music from Keli’i Kaneali’i with hula by Elisha Kaneali’i, while a professional photographer works the room; the photography is complimentary, which most luaus charge for.

Dinner is a full buffet — whole roasted pig, poke, mahi mahi, salads, entrées and desserts — with an open bar of beer, wine, mai tais and soft drinks running throughout. The 70-minute production moves from Hawaiian hula through Tahitian and Samoan dance and closes on the Samoan fire knife, with an intermission in the middle. Pricing is $180 for adults, $140 junior, $85 child, and young children go free, which is among the lowest child pricing on the island. Dress code is resort casual and it is enforced: no beachwear, no sandals, and a light jacket earns its keep once the breeze comes off the bay after dark.

Luau Kalamaku Manor House Experience — Kilohana Plantation

The Manor House Experience is the upgrade tier at Kilohana Plantation, and it inverts the usual luau order: dinner comes first, privately, and the show comes after. The evening starts with a champagne welcome at the historic estate, where women receive fresh flower leis and men shell leis, followed by an intimate four-course dinner at Gaylord’s Restaurant. The Chef de Cuisine builds the menu around meat, fish and produce grown on Kilohana’s own 60-acre orchard and agricultural park, and the room seats parties from two to twenty.

When the sky darkens, guests are walked by torchlight to the Luau Pavilion and take premium reserved seats for Kalamaku, an award-winning theatrical production that tells the story of the ancient voyages between Hawaii and Tahiti along one of the longest sea roads in Polynesia. It ends in a fire dream sequence of fire poi balls and traditional fire knife dancing. The evening runs about three and a half hours at $262.88 per adult; check-in is by 5:00 PM at the mansion, guests under 18 need adult supervision, and the Manor House tier has limited capacity and books out well ahead of the standard seating.

Which one to book

Book Drums & Dances of Polynesia if you are travelling with children, staying anywhere near Lihue, flying out the next morning, or simply want the classic buffet-and-fire-knife luau without a long drive. Book the Manor House Experience if the luau is the occasion rather than one item on a list — an anniversary, a milestone birthday, or a night where a proper sit-down dinner and a front-row seat matter more than the buffet line.

Both sell out in peak season, so book two to three weeks ahead to get the date and the seating you want.
