WHO IT IS FOR
First-timers who are 14 or older and happy to learn alongside other people. Fourteen is a hard floor for the group lesson, so this will not work for families with younger children. The lesson runs two hours from Hans Hedemann Surf Waikiki at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel, 150 Kapahulu Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96815, and opens with water safety principles and a land lesson before you go in. If you are booking alone you do not need to find people to go with, because the school forms a group for you. A semi-private option taking up to three students is also available from the same location if you would rather keep the numbers down and are willing to pay more for it.
Consider instead: for a child under 14, Waikiki Beach Services teach from age 5 and require one-to-one for anyone 12 or under, at $150. If you already surf and want technique work rather than an introduction, Ohana Surf Project’s advanced lesson is $120 for two hours.
