WHO IT IS FOR
People who want to ride a wave today, without the work that normally comes first. There is no paddling and no pop-up: you slide in and ride, which removes the two things that stop most beginners ever standing up in a first ocean lesson. Wai Kai run it as their easiest entry point to surfing, and the session is 45 minutes. It also suits nervous water users, because this is a controlled pool rather than open ocean with currents, reef and other surfers to read. Helmets and soft-top boards are mandatory for your first three waves. Worth knowing before you book: residents and military get discounts on production of a valid Hawaii State Driver’s Licence or active Military ID at check-in, and The LineUp Local Membership programme is free to join in person at their Guest Services Center inside Sessions Surf Shop.
Consider instead: once you can ride confidently, Wai Kai’s 65-foot wave is the performance step up at $75. If you would rather learn in the ocean with an instructor, North Shore Ohana’s open group lesson is $120 for 90 minutes at Chun’s Reef.
HOW IT COMPARES
Once you can ride the beginner wave, the 65-foot wave session is $75 for proficient surfers, and the Ultimate Surf & Paddle bundle turns it into a full day at Wai Kai from $164. Read our Wai Kai guide to pick a session.
