WHO IT IS FOR
Paddlers who want to set their own route and pace. The tour starts in the protected Ka’elepulu Stream, part of Hawaii’s largest body of freshwater streams, where the water is genuinely flat – a much easier place to find your balance than open water, which makes this workable even if you are fairly new to a paddleboard. From there you can cruise Kailua Bay’s miles of protected water, visit the offshore islands, stop at the sandy beaches, or surf the seasonal waves. The single most valuable inclusion is the DLNR Offshore Islet Landing Permit, which is what legally allows you to land on the islets; without it that part of the trip is simply off. Also included: an NSP or Riviera board at 10 to 11 feet, full EVA foam deck pad, surf leash, SUP paddle, snorkel mask, boogie board and beach mat. All participants must be able to swim.
Consider instead: if you would rather be guided and fed, Kailua Beach Adventures’ guided paddle tour is $179 and includes a made-to-order lunch. If you have never stood on a board at all, Hans Hedemann teach stand-up paddling in Waikiki for $100.
