Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

It is a museum, a monument and a cemetery at once — and that combination asks something of children that a normal day out does not. Handled well, it is often the thing they remember longest.

Quick Answer: Yes, with planning. Missouri and the Bowfin suit ages 7+ and are physical and climbable; the Arizona Memorial lands best at 10+. Book the earliest program, and note that no bags — including nappy bags — are allowed. Do Missouri first, Arizona second, and leave by early afternoon.

TL;DR

  • Under 6: enjoy the boats, understand little — keep it short
  • Ages 7–11: Missouri and the submarine are the winners
  • Ages 12+: can engage with the whole history properly
  • No bags at all, nappy bags included — sort this in the car park
  • Book the earliest slot: cooler, quieter, before patience runs out
  • Missouri first, Arizona second, then leave by early afternoon

Is Pearl Harbor Suitable for Children?

Yes — with the honest caveat that it lands very differently depending on age, and that the site is a cemetery as well as a museum.

Roughly: under 6 will enjoy the boats and the water and understand almost none of it. Ages 7–11 get a lot out of the Missouri and the submarine, which are physical, climbable and concrete, while the Arizona program is mostly quiet standing. Ages 12+ can engage with the full history and often find it the most affecting thing they do in Hawaii.

The documentary shown before the Arizona program includes archival attack footage. It is not graphic by modern standards, but it is real, and sensitive children may find it upsetting. Nobody minds if you step out.

The Logistics That Matter More with Kids

The bag ban is the big one. No bags at all — and that includes nappy bags. There is paid storage on site, but plan for it rather than discovering it at the gate. Practically, this means:

  • Feed and change everyone in the car park before you go in.
  • Carry nappies, wipes and snacks loose in pockets, or accept the storage queue.
  • Water fountains exist inside; bottles are generally permitted but bags to carry them are not.
  • Strollers are allowed, but cannot go on the shuttle boat to the memorial.

Timing. Book the earliest Arizona program you can get. It is cooler, quieter, and lands before the afternoon meltdown window. Arrive an hour ahead regardless.

The boat. The memorial is reached by a Navy-operated shuttle boat, which most children enjoy and which breaks up the standing. The program runs about 45 minutes in total.

Which Sites Work Best for Which Ages

SiteBest forWhy
Battleship Missouri7+Climbable, huge, guns and decks; the most physical site by far
USS Bowfin submarine8+Genuinely cramped interior — thrilling for some, claustrophobic for others
Pacific Aviation Museum6+Real aircraft, hangars, flight simulators
USS Arizona Memorial10+Quiet, reflective, mostly standing; the meaning needs some context
Visitor centre & groundsAll agesOutdoor space, harbour views, room to move between indoor stops

If you have younger children and one morning, the honest recommendation is Missouri first, Arizona second — start with the one they can climb on, then ask for quiet when their patience is still intact. The Battleships of WWII tour covers both plus Punchbowl in a single guided run, which spares you the ticketing juggle.

Talking to Children About It Beforehand

A short conversation in the car makes an enormous difference to how the morning goes. Three things worth saying:

  1. What happened, simply. On 7 December 1941 this harbour was attacked without warning, and the United States entered the Second World War the next day.
  2. Why people are quiet. Over 1,100 sailors and Marines are still inside the Arizona. It is their grave. That is why we use quiet voices and do not run on the memorial.
  3. The oil. Droplets still rise from the hull and spread on the surface — often called the “black tears.” Children notice it immediately, and it is the detail that tends to make the whole thing real for them.

“Children rarely remember the dates. They remember that the oil is still coming up after eighty years, and that the adults went quiet. That is the visit doing its job.”

Building a Realistic Family Day

Pearl Harbor is emotionally heavy and physically tiring. Do not stack it against another demanding afternoon.

A pattern that works: early Arizona program, then the Missouri, then leave by early afternoon and go and do something in the water. The site is on the western side of the island, so continuing to a beach or heading toward the North Shore is natural rather than backtracking.

If you would rather make it a full guided island day with the driving handled, the AllStar Oahu Circle Island Tour and the Grand Circle Island & Dole Plantation Tour both fold Pearl Harbor into a wider loop. For families who want the pace entirely under their own control, the Private Best of Oahu Tour lets you cut a stop when someone has had enough — which, with children, is a feature worth paying for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pearl Harbor appropriate for young children?

It is suitable, though it lands differently by age. Under 6 enjoy the boats but understand little; 7–11 do best with the Missouri and submarine; 12+ engage with the full history.

Can you bring a nappy bag to Pearl Harbor?

No. The bag ban covers nappy bags too. Use the paid storage on site, or sort feeding and changing in the car park and carry essentials in pockets.

Which Pearl Harbor site is best for kids?

The Battleship Missouri. It is enormous, climbable and hands-on, and it holds children’s attention far better than the quieter Arizona Memorial program.

How long should a family spend at Pearl Harbor?

Three to four hours works for most families — the visitor centre, the Arizona program, and the Missouri. Leave by early afternoon.

How do you explain Pearl Harbor to a child?

Keep it simple: the harbour was attacked without warning in 1941, over 1,100 sailors are still inside the Arizona, and that is why people speak quietly there.
