The memorial itself is free. The reservation is the hard part, the bag rule catches almost everyone, and most visitors budget about half the time they actually need.
Quick Answer: The USS Arizona Memorial program is free but needs a timed reservation, released on Recreation.gov 56 days ahead at 3:00pm HST ($1 fee). No bags allowed on site. Allow 2–3 hours minimum, 6–8 for all five sites. Guided tours that include the reservation remove nearly every friction point.
TL;DR
- Five sites, not one — Arizona, Missouri, Bowfin, Aviation Museum, visitor centre
- Arizona is free but reservation-only, released 56 days out at 3pm HST
- Missed it? A limited next-day batch drops at 3pm HST the day before
- No bags at all — pockets only, or use the paid storage queue
- Arrive an hour early for parking, storage and screening
- 30–45 minutes from Waikiki, longer in morning traffic
Pearl Harbor Is Five Places, Not One
The single biggest planning mistake is treating “Pearl Harbor” as one attraction. It is a cluster of sites sharing a visitor centre, and they are run by different organisations with different ticketing:
| Site | Run by | Time | Ticketing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pearl Harbor Visitor Center | National Park Service | 1–2 hrs | Free entry |
| USS Arizona Memorial | National Park Service | 45 min program | Free program, timed reservation required |
| Battleship Missouri | Private non-profit | 2–3 hrs | Paid ticket, no timed slot |
| USS Bowfin Submarine | Private non-profit | 1 hr | Paid ticket |
| Pacific Aviation Museum | Private non-profit | 2 hrs | Paid ticket, on Ford Island |
The Arizona Memorial — the one everyone pictures, built over the sunken hull — is free, but requires a timed reservation you almost certainly need to book in advance. The Missouri, Bowfin and Aviation Museum are separate paid attractions. Bundled tours exist precisely because assembling this yourself is fiddly.

The Reservation System, Explained Properly
This is where trips go wrong, so read it twice.
- Arizona Memorial reservations are released on Recreation.gov, 56 days (8 weeks) in advance, at 3:00pm Hawaii time. There is a $1 per ticket service charge; the program itself is free.
- Peak-season slots can be gone within minutes of release. Set an alarm and be logged in before 3:00pm HST on the day your date opens.
- If you miss that window, a limited batch of next-day reservations is released at 3:00pm HST the day before. It is a genuine second chance but not a guarantee.
- Walk-up same-day tickets no longer exist. Turning up and hoping is not a plan.
- Many guided tours include the Arizona reservation, which is the simplest way to sidestep the whole exercise — worth the premium for most visitors.
The Bag Rule Nobody Reads Until They Are Standing There
No bags are permitted at the visitor centre — no purses, backpacks, nappy bags, or camera cases. There is a paid storage facility on site, but the queue for it is real, especially mid-morning.
Bring what fits in your pockets: phone, wallet, and a camera without a case. Leave everything else in the car or at the hotel. This one rule causes more stress on arrival than anything else at the site, and it is entirely avoidable.
Arrive at least an hour before your ticket time to absorb parking, bag storage and security screening. The theatre program starts promptly and latecomers are not admitted.
How Much Time to Give It
| Plan | Time | What you cover |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 2–3 hrs | Visitor centre exhibits, documentary, Arizona Memorial program |
| Standard | 4–5 hrs | The above plus Battleship Missouri |
| Full | 6–8 hrs | All five sites including Bowfin and the Aviation Museum |
Most visitors underestimate. The exhibits at the visitor centre are genuinely excellent and free, and rushing them to make a Missouri slot is a poor trade. If you have half a day, do the Arizona and the visitor centre properly. If you have a full day, add the Missouri — the contrast between the ship where the war began and the deck where it formally ended is the point of visiting both.

Getting There from Waikiki
Pearl Harbor sits about 30–45 minutes west of Waikiki, longer in morning traffic. Options:
- Guided tour with transport. Simplest by a distance — hotel pickup, the Arizona reservation handled, a guide providing context, and no parking or bag logistics. The Battleships of WWII at Pearl Harbor from Waikiki covers Arizona, Missouri, Oklahoma and Punchbowl in one run.
- Rental car. Parking is free but fills early. You still need your own Arizona reservation.
- TheBus. Cheapest, slowest, and note that bags are not permitted at the site — which complicates the journey.
- Rideshare. Fine outbound; pickup on the way back can be slow.
Combining Pearl Harbor with a wider island day is common and works well, since the site is on the way to the west and north. The AllStar Oahu Circle Island Tour and the Grand Circle Island & Dole Plantation Tour both make a full island day of it. Visiting from another island? There is a Pearl Harbor day trip from the Big Island.
“The Arizona is a war grave with over a thousand men still inside it, and oil still rises from the hull. Whatever else you plan around it, give that part of the morning the quiet it asks for.”
Practical Notes
- Dress respectfully. This is an active memorial and a cemetery. Shirts and shoes required; swimwear is not appropriate.
- Open daily 7am–5pm, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The first programs of the day are the least crowded.
- The shuttle boat is Navy-operated and the memorial is reached by water. Rough weather or Navy operations can suspend it, in which case the program runs without the boat trip.
- Accessibility is good — the visitor centre and memorial are wheelchair accessible.
- December 7 brings commemorative events and very heavy demand. Book much further ahead.
