Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.
Every winter, humpback whales come to the channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai, and almost every Maui boat turns into a whale boat. The real choice is not which company but which kind of boat, and which side of the island you leave from. Here are the five options on this site, compared on price, boat and minimum age.
Quick Answer: For families and first-timers, the Maalaea catamaran is the cheapest and most comfortable at $59.95, with restrooms and shade. For eye-level whales, take the Kihei raft at $85. West Maui guests can board straight from Kaanapali Beach for $89. Season runs roughly December to April.

Catamaran or raft?
Height is the difference. On a large catamaran you look down at a whale from a deck several metres up. On a raft you sit almost at the waterline, so a humpback surfacing nearby is at eye level. The trade-off is a bumpier ride, no restrooms and more spray.
The Maalaea catamaran includes sodas and juice, sells drinks for $3, and takes children under 4 free, one per paying adult. The Kihei raft offers guaranteed sightings, and a private raft for up to 24 is $1,630, about $68 each when full.

Kihei, Maalaea or Kaanapali?
- Kihei and Wailea guests: the Kihei Boat Ramp trips are minutes away; Maalaea is about 15 minutes.
- Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kapalua guests: the Kaanapali Beach trips save the 45-minute drive south. Boarding is from the sand, so expect wet feet.
- Anyone combining a snorkel trip: Maalaea is also the harbor for Molokini.
If you are staying west, our West Maui guide covers what else is bookable from there; south-siders should see South Maui.

When to go
Humpbacks are in Maui waters roughly December to April, and the Maalaea catamaran runs over that window. Mornings are usually calmer, which matters most on a raft. For which island and which month is best, read whale watching in Hawaii: when to go.
Sighting guarantees and what to bring
Two of the five trips guarantee sightings. The Kihei raft guarantees whales, and the Kaanapali Beach trip lets you come again free if you do not see any. In peak season the guarantee rarely comes into play, but early and late in the season it is worth having.
- A light layer: the channel is windy even on warm days.
- Sunglasses on a strap and reef-safe sunscreen.
- Seasickness tablets if you are prone, especially for the raft.
- A phone pouch or dry bag; the Kaanapali boat has dry bag storage.
- Water shoes or sandals for the Kaanapali beach boarding.
Check in 30 minutes before departure for the Maalaea and Kihei trips; late arrivals can lose their seats.
