Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.
Humpbacks are in Hawaiian water for less than half the year. Book outside that window and you will see nothing at all.
Quick Answer: Humpback whales are in Hawaii from roughly December through April, with the reliable peak in January and February. Maui has the highest concentration because the shallow Auau Channel is the main calving ground, but Kona on the Big Island lets you pair a morning whale watch with an evening manta ray snorkel — the combo runs $219. Outside December to April, there are no humpbacks to see.
TL;DR
- Season: December to April. Peak is February. Nothing to see May to November.
- Best island: Maui, for the sheltered Auau Channel calving ground.
- Best combo: Kona — whale watch plus manta snorkel, $219, in one day.
- The law: 100 yards. Boats cannot approach closer, and neither can you.
- Book: Morning departures. Trade winds build through the afternoon.
When is whale season in Hawaii?
North Pacific humpbacks migrate roughly 3,000 miles from Alaskan feeding grounds to Hawaii to breed and calve. The first arrivals show up in late November or December, numbers build through January, peak in February, thin out through March, and the last stragglers leave by April or early May.
That is the whole window. A whale watch booked in July is a boat ride. Some operators run seasonally for exactly this reason, so if a tour is bookable year-round, check what it is actually promising to show you.
Whales do not read calendars, but the pattern is consistent enough that February is the safest single month to plan around if sightings are the priority.
| Month | Sightings | Worth booking? |
|---|---|---|
| Dec | Building | Yes, improving weekly |
| Jan | Strong | Yes |
| Feb | Peak | Best month of the year |
| Mar | Strong | Yes |
| Apr | Thinning | Early April only |
| May–Nov | None | No humpbacks in Hawaii |

Which island gives the best whale watching?
Maui is the answer most of the time. The Auau Channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai is shallow and sheltered, which is exactly what mothers with new calves want, so density there is higher than anywhere else in the chain.
The Big Island has fewer whales but one advantage nowhere else offers: Kona is the manta ray coast. You can watch humpbacks in the morning and snorkel with mantas after dark on the same day, which is why the combo exists.
Oahu and Kauai both get whales passing through and both run boats, but if whales are the specific reason for the trip, Maui and Kona are the two to weigh.

How close can boats get to whales?
100 yards. Humpbacks are federally protected in Hawaii and vessels must stay that distance off. That is not an operator policy you can shop around — it applies to every boat, and to swimmers, paddlers and drones too.
What this means practically: any tour promising you a close encounter is either misdescribing itself or planning to break the rules. A good captain positions the boat and lets the whales choose to approach, which they often do. Those approaches are the ones people remember.
Morning or afternoon?
Morning, almost always. Trade winds build through the day across the whole chain, and a choppy surface makes spotting blows and flukes considerably harder. It also makes the ride less pleasant if anyone in your group is prone to seasickness.
The exception is a sunset sailing where the whales are a bonus rather than the point.
On the Big Island the two seasons overlap: the winter Whale Watch and Manta Snorkel Combo pairs humpbacks with Konaβs after-dark encounter for $219. Our manta ray night snorkel guide explains how the evening works.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you see whales in Hawaii in summer?
No. North Pacific humpbacks are in Alaskan waters through the summer feeding season and are not in Hawaii between roughly May and November. Any summer boat tour is being sold on something else — snorkeling, sunset, or dolphins.
What month has the most whales in Hawaii?
February. Numbers build from December, peak through February, and taper across March. If you can only pick one month for sightings, pick February.
Can you see whales from shore in Hawaii?
Yes, regularly, during season. Elevated coastal lookouts on south and west Maui are particularly good. Bring binoculars and watch for the blow rather than the body — it is what you spot first.
Do whale watching tours guarantee sightings?
Many operators offer a sighting guarantee during peak season, typically a free second trip rather than a refund. Confirm what the guarantee actually gives you before booking, because the terms vary.
Is whale watching worth it with young children?
It can be, but the boat matters more than the whales. Look for a larger, more stable vessel and a shorter trip. Very young children often do better on a shore-based lookout than two hours offshore.
