The Big Island is the volcano island and most tours reflect it. Kona or Hilo, what a private day costs against a shared one, and why manta rays are the other draw.

Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

The Big Island is bigger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, and almost every decision you make there is really a decision about driving.

Quick Answer: Two things define Big Island tours: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Kona manta rays. Which side you stay on decides the cost — from Hilo a volcano shore excursion is $125, while from Kona the same park means a 12 to 14 hour day at $295.99. The manta night snorkel is $139 and is the one thing you cannot do anywhere else.

TL;DR

Kona or Hilo? It changes everything

Hilo sits on the wet, green east side, close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Kona is on the dry, sunny west side, close to the manta rays and most of the resorts. The park is roughly two to two and a half hours from Kona.

That gap is the single biggest cost driver on the island. From Hilo, a volcano shore excursion is $125 for eight hours. From Kona, the equivalent runs $295.99 across 12 to 14 hours, because you are paying for four to five hours of transport.

We break the choice down properly in volcano tours from Kona or Hilo.

What the volcano tours actually cost

TourPriceLengthFrom
Volcano shore excursion$1258 hrsHilo
Punalu’u black sand & volcano$1798 hrsHilo
Elite volcano hike$295.9914 hrsKona
Private volcano tour$374.589 hrsHilo
Private Kilauea Iki hike$1,000 / up to 84.5 hrsIn park

Read the pricing basis carefully. The $1,000 Kilauea Iki hike is for a group of up to eight, which is about $125 a head — the same as the cheapest shared excursion, for a private guide. More on the walking options in hiking Kilauea.

The manta rays are the other reason to come

Kona’s manta ray night snorkel has no equivalent anywhere else in Hawaii. Lights are placed in the water, plankton gathers, and mantas with wingspans of several metres come in to feed beneath you.

The basic session is $139 for about 50 minutes in the water. The sunset combo is $135 and adds golden hour beforehand, which makes it the better value of the two. Between December and April the whale watch and manta combo is $219.

Volcano tours
Kilauea and the surrounding park are the anchor of almost every Big Island itinerary.

Is a private tour worth it here?

More than on other islands, because the driving is the problem. Private Big Island days run from $374.58 to $1,595 for a custom 7.5-hour day for up to 11 people, and the Frozen Fire shore excursion is $1,250 for eight hours.

Spread across a family or a group of eight, several of those land near or below the per-head cost of a shared coach, and you set the timings. For two people they do not.

Something other than volcanoes

The fat tire e-bike tour along the 2018 lava coast is $189 for four hours, ages 15 and up — a genuinely different way to see terrain that is only a few years old.

Punalu’u black sand beach pairs turtles with craters on the same $179 day, and is the classic photograph most people have in mind before they arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to stay in Kona or Hilo?

Hilo for volcanoes, rainforest and waterfalls; Kona for sun, resorts and the manta rays. The park is two to two and a half hours from Kona, which is why Kona-based volcano tours run 12 to 14 hours against eight from Hilo.

How much is a volcano tour on the Big Island?

From $125 for an eight-hour shared excursion out of Hilo. Kona departures run $295.99 because of the drive. Private tours start around $374.58 and run to $1,595 for a custom day for up to 11 people.

Can you see lava on the Big Island right now?

Kilauea’s activity changes constantly and no honest operator guarantees flowing lava. What is always there is the landscape it built. See our guide on whether you can see lava in Hawaii for current context.

What is the best Big Island tour?

If you only book one thing, the Kona manta ray night snorkel at $139 — it exists nowhere else. If you only have one day, a volcano tour, priced by which side you are staying on.

How many days do you need on the Big Island?

Four to five minimum if you want both the volcano park and the Kona coast, because they are on opposite sides of a very large island. Three days works if you pick one side and stay there.
