Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Molokini has the visibility. Turtle Town has the turtles. Most good mornings on Maui’s south shore involve both — here is how to choose.

Quick Answer: Molokini for visibility and fish density; Turtle Town for reliable turtle encounters and a shorter, less weather-dependent trip. Tours start at $109.95. Book the earliest departure available — wind builds by mid-morning and ruins both.

TL;DR

Aerial view of the crescent-shaped Molokini Crater rising from deep blue ocean off the south coast of Maui
Molokini — a partly submerged volcanic crescent about 40 minutes offshore from Maalaea.

Two names you will hear constantly

Ask anyone about snorkelling on Maui and you get the same two answers: Molokini
and Turtle Town. They are genuinely different experiences and most visitors should
understand the distinction before booking.

Molokini Crater

A partially submerged volcanic caldera three miles off the south coast, shaped like
a crescent. The inner bay is sheltered, the water is famously clear — visibility
regularly exceeds 100 feet — and it is a Marine Life Conservation District, so the
fish population is dense.

The catch is that Molokini is weather-dependent and popular. Boats leave early
because the wind builds by mid-morning and the crater gets choppy. A 6:00am departure
is not the operator being difficult; it is the only reliable window.

Turtle Town

A stretch of lava-formed reef and underwater arches off Makena on the south shore,
named for exactly what you would expect. It is closer in, less weather-dependent, and
the turtle encounters are consistent.

The beginner-focused Turtle Town tour
at $129 is built for people who have never snorkelled — guided, slow, and with
time spent on technique before you get in.

On sea scooters

Underwater scooters — handheld propulsion units — genuinely change the
experience. They let weaker swimmers cover the same ground as strong ones without
exhausting themselves, which matters on a reef system as spread out as Turtle Town.
If anyone in your party is an anxious swimmer, the
scooter tour
at $149 is worth the $20 premium over a standard trip.

“If your group has mixed swimming ability, sea scooters solve the problem better than any amount of encouragement.”

Molokini or Turtle Town?

Book Molokini if visibility and fish density are what you came for,
you can handle an early start, and you are visiting in calmer months. Book
Turtle Town if you want turtles, a shorter boat ride, and a trip that
is less likely to be cancelled.

Many boats do both in one morning — Molokini first while it is calm, then Turtle
Town on the way back. That combination is the standard south-shore itinerary and
usually the best use of a morning.

Practical notes

  • Book the earliest departure you can stand. On Maui’s south shore
this is not a preference, it is the difference between clear water and chop.
  • Winter is whale season. December to April, humpbacks are in the
Auʻau Channel. Snorkel boats regularly stop for them, and the
Big Island whale and manta combo
is the equivalent if you are island-hopping.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only. Enforced, and Molokini is a conservation
    district.
  • Prescription masks exist. Ask when booking if you wear glasses;
    several operators stock them free.

If you are heading to the Big Island as well, the
manta ray night snorkel
is the one water experience there that has no Maui equivalent.

Prefer to paddle? Maui kayak tours include a three-hour kayak and snorkel trip on Makena’s turtle reef.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Molokini or Turtle Town better for snorkeling?

Molokini for visibility and fish; Turtle Town for turtles and reliability. Many boats do both.

Why do Maui snorkel tours leave so early?

Trade winds build by mid-morning and turn Molokini choppy, so early departures get the calm, clear water.

How much does snorkeling cost on Maui?

Shared tours run $109 to $149. Private tours start at $199, and whole-boat charters run into the thousands.

Are sea scooters worth it for snorkeling?

Yes if your group has mixed swimming ability — they let weaker swimmers cover the reef without tiring.
