Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.
Maui is not one destination. It is four coasts with real driving between them, and that geography decides your week more than any list of attractions.
Quick Answer: Base yourself on south Maui (Kihei or Wailea) or west Maui and accept you will not do both properly in a week. The three things almost everyone should do are a surf lesson from $99, a Molokini or Turtle Town snorkel from $109, and the Road to Hana. Cheapest things on the island start at $26.50 for a keiki activity and $53 for a cocktail class.
TL;DR
- Pick one side: South or west. The drive between them costs you half a day each time.
- Book early: Haleakala sunrise needs a reservation. So does Hana if you want to do it well.
- Cheapest wins: Keiki T-shirt painting is $26.50; a mixology class is $53.
- Best value day: Kayak and snorkel at Makena, $109 for three hours.
- Do not: Try to drive Hana and Haleakala on the same day. People do. It ruins both.
Maui is four coasts, and that is the whole planning problem
South Maui (Kihei, Wailea) is dry, sunny and where most snorkelling and beginner surf happens. West Maui (Kaanapali, Kapalua) is resort territory. Upcountry climbs to Haleakala. East Maui is Hana, which is a full day in itself.
Kahului airport sits in the middle. From there it is 30 to 45 minutes to Kihei and about an hour to the west side, which is why transfers are priced at $80 and $140 respectively. Those numbers are a decent proxy for how far apart everything is.
The mistake first-timers make is booking a west-side hotel and a south-side activity schedule, then spending the week in the car.

The three things almost everyone should do
Get in the water with a lesson. Maui has no single beginner beach the way Waikiki does, so the school picks the spot. Group lessons at Kalama Park start at $99 and a family lesson for three to five people is $120 each. Full detail in our Maui surf guide.
Snorkel somewhere real. Molokini is the famous crescent; Turtle Town off Maluaka is the reliable one. The Makena kayak and snorkel is $109 for three hours, and the Quicksilver boat is $109.95. We compare the formats in boat, kayak or sea scooter.
Drive the Road to Hana, or pay someone else to. It is 64 miles of one-lane bridges and it takes the whole day either way.

A workable first week
| Day | Plan | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, settle, beach near your base | Transfer $60–$140 |
| 2 | Surf lesson, then recover | From $99 |
| 3 | Molokini or Turtle Town snorkel | $109–$110 |
| 4 | Road to Hana — the whole day | Fuel, or a guided tour |
| 5 | Slow day. Cacao farm tour, or a beach | $95 |
| 6 | Haleakala sunrise, sleep in the afternoon | Reservation required |
| 7 | Whatever you wished you had more of | — |
Note what is not in there: two big driving days back to back. Hana on day four and Haleakala on day six leaves a recovery day between them, which is the single most useful thing in this table.
Cheap things that are actually good
Maui has a reputation for being expensive and mostly earns it, but the cheapest bookable things on the island are not filler. Keiki t-shirt painting at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is $26.50 for ages 2 to 10. An hour-long cocktail class is $53 for over-21s. The escape room at Whaler’s Village is $60 and is the island’s best answer to a wet afternoon.
The Ku’ia Estate cacao farm tour is $95 for 90 minutes and ends in a nine-chocolate tasting — Hawaii is the only US state that grows cacao commercially.
Practical things nobody tells you
Haleakala sunrise needs a reservation booked in advance through the national park, separate from any tour. Turning up without one does not work.
Reef-safe sunscreen is the law in Hawaii, not a suggestion. Buy it before you need it.
You probably want a car for a week on Maui — public transport is limited and the island is spread out. For short stays or resort-based trips, transfers work out simpler.

Landing at Kahului? A lei greeting at the airport is the traditional start to a Maui trip; our guide to airport lei greetings on Maui covers what they cost and how the meet-up works. For a day on two wheels, bike tours in Hawaii compares the self-paced Haleakala downhill rides with the Big Island’s e-bike tour across the 2018 lava coast.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do you need on Maui?
Five to seven. That gives you a surf or snorkel day, the Road to Hana, a Haleakala sunrise and recovery time between the two big driving days. Fewer than four and you are choosing between Hana and Haleakala rather than doing both.
Should you stay in south or west Maui?
South Maui (Kihei, Wailea) is closer to snorkelling, beginner surf and the airport. West Maui (Kaanapali, Kapalua) is resort-focused and about an hour from Kahului. Pick one and build the week around it rather than commuting between them.
What is the cheapest thing to do on Maui?
Bookable activities start around $26.50 for keiki t-shirt painting and $53 for an adult cocktail class. Group surf lessons start at $99 and snorkel trips at $109.
Can you do the Road to Hana and Haleakala on the same day?
Technically yes, and it is a bad idea. Each is a full day, Haleakala sunrise means a pre-dawn start, and Hana is 64 miles of one-lane bridges. Put a rest day between them.
Do you need a car on Maui?
For a week, almost certainly. Public transport is limited and the island is spread out. For a short resort-based stay, private transfers from Kahului at $60 to $140 are often simpler and cheaper than a week of hire and parking.
