Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.
Maui has no single beginner beach the way Waikiki does. That turns out to be an advantage — here is how to pick your spot and your lesson.
Quick Answer: Learn at Kalama Beach Park in Kihei if you are brand new; it is the most forgiving beginner break on the island. Group lessons start at $99, private at $150. If you have three days, the $480 surf camp is the best value on the island.
TL;DR
- Best beginner break: Kalama Beach Park, Kihei — sandy bottom, gentle reform.
- Cheapest lesson: Waves Hawaii group lesson at $99.
- Best value overall: Three-day surf camp at $480.
- Go in the morning: Trade winds chop the surface by late morning, year-round.

Maui is not Oahu, and that changes where you learn
Waikiki has one famously forgiving beginner wave and a hundred instructors working
it. Maui does not have a single equivalent. Instead it has a handful of distinct
learning zones, and which one you end up at depends mostly on where you are staying
and what the swell is doing that week.
That is genuinely good news for beginners. It means Maui lessons are smaller, less
crowded, and more likely to move to the spot that suits conditions rather than the
spot that suits the crowd.

The three main learning areas
Kihei and Kalama Beach Park (South Maui)
Kalama is the default beginner break on the south side: a sandy-bottomed,
gently sloping wave that reforms in a way that lets you get to your feet without
much consequence. Most South Maui lessons run here.
Prices start at $99 for a
group lesson with Waves Hawaii
and $120 for a
small-group lesson at Kalama Beach Park.
Step up to a semi-private lesson
at $165 and you share one instructor with only your own group.
Lahaina and West Maui
The west side has longer, slower waves and, on the right day, some of the most
pleasant learning conditions in the state.
Stand-up paddle lessons in Lahaina
run $175 and are worth considering if the surf is flat — SUP works on days when
surfing does not.
Further along the coast,
Ukumehame
($250 private) is the quiet-water option: fewer people, more time on the wave, and a
break that rewards patience.
Moving breaks: the surf safari format
Maui’s most distinctive offering is the safari — four or more hours with a local
pro who picks the break on the day. The
Private Surf Safari
runs $500 for four hours, and the
Royal Hawaiian Surfari
runs $475 for four to eight hours chasing whatever is working.
These are not beginner products. They are for surfers who already stand up and
want to be taken somewhere better than they would find alone.
What it costs on Maui

| Family | $120 | 3 – 5, your family only | 2 hr |
| Semi-private | $140 – $165 | 2 – 3 surfers | 90 min – 2 hr |
| Private | $150 – $250 | One-to-one | 90 min – 2 hr |
| Surf safari | $475 – $500 | One-to-one, moving breaks | 4 – 8 hr |

Two options worth calling out
The Baby Surf Experience
at $225 is tandem surfing for very young children — the instructor rides with them.
It is the only realistic way to get a toddler onto a wave safely, and parents
consistently rate it as the photo of the trip.
The Three-Day Surf Camp at Kalama Park
at $480 is the best value on this list if you have the days. Three sessions is
roughly where most people stop fighting the board and start surfing it. One lesson
teaches you to stand; three teaches you to catch your own wave.
“One lesson will get you standing. Three lessons will get you surfing. If your trip is long enough, book the camp.”
When to go in the water
South Maui (Kihei, Kalama) is most consistent in summer, when south swells arrive.
West Maui works year-round for beginners but gets bigger in winter. If you are
visiting December to March and you are brand new, ask specifically for a beginner
break — winter swell on Maui is real, and the same spot can be unrecognisable
week to week.
Morning is almost always better. Trade winds build through the day and chop the
surface; a 7:30am lesson is glassier and less crowded than an 11:00am one.
What is included, and what is not
Every lesson here includes the board and a rash guard. Reef-safe sunscreen is
usually provided but bring your own if you are particular. What is generally not
included: transport to the beach, parking, and photos. If you want images, ask before
booking — some operators include them and some charge separately.
