The Road to Hana is the Hana Highway along Maui’s windward coast: roughly 64 miles from Paia to Hana, with about 620 curves and 59 bridges, most of them one lane, past waterfalls, rainforest and black sand beaches. You can drive it yourself or let a guide drive, and the right choice comes down to cost, carsickness and whether the driver wants to see the views too. Here is what our five Road to Hana tours cost and what driving yourself involves. Prices checked October 26, 2026.

Quick Answer: A Road to Hana tour costs $225 per adult on a small-group day that pairs the Haleakala summit with the first half of the road, or $1,700 to $2,290 per group for a private tour with your own driver guide. Driving yourself costs only a rental car and fuel, but the round trip takes 10 to 12 hours with stops, and the driver spends it watching the road. Take a tour if anyone gets carsick or the driver wants to enjoy the views; drive if you want to set your own pace and are happy on narrow, one-lane bridges.

What Driving the Road Yourself Involves

The Hana Highway runs from Paia along Maui’s windward coast to Hana: roughly 64 miles, about 620 curves and 59 bridges, most of them one lane. Straight through, it takes about 2.5 hours each way, but with stops the round trip takes 10 to 12 hours.

Driving yourself is cheaper and gives you full control, but it asks a lot of the driver. You will give way at one-lane bridges, find parking at crowded pull-offs and keep your eyes on the road while everyone else watches the coast. If you go, start by 6:30 or 7am, ahead of the tour vans, and book Wai’anapanapa State Park entry and parking in advance. Our Road to Hana driving guide has the stop-by-stop plan.

When a Guided Tour Is Worth It

  • Someone gets carsick. Our driving guide’s advice is blunt: if a passenger is prone to carsickness, take a tour.
  • The driver wants to see it too. On a tour, nobody spends the day staring at the next curve.
  • You want Haleakala as well. Three of our tours pair the road with the Haleakala summit, which would be a very long day to drive yourself.
  • You are a group of seven or more. A private van for up to 13 works out at about $176 each when full, which is less than the $225 small-group ticket.
  • You are staying near the harbor or have no car. The small-group and private van tours both pick up from hotels, condos and the Kahului cruise port.

When Driving Yourself Is the Better Choice

  • You are two people on a budget. A private tour for two costs $895.50 each or more, and even the small-group tour is $225 each.
  • You want long, unhurried stops. If you want an hour at one waterfall and none at the next, a car gives you that.
  • You are a confident driver who is happy to pull over, reverse and give way on narrow roads.

Private Tour Cost per Person

What a private tour costs per head as the group grows.

Halfway to Hana (6 hours)$1,791$895.50 each$447.75 each$255.86 each with 7

Custom van, up to 13$2,290$1,145 each$572.50 each$176.15 each with 13

Private tours are priced per group, so the more of you there are, the better they look. For a family of four, the 6-hour private tour costs $447.75 each, about twice the small-group ticket, but you get your own guide and route. Our guide to private tours on Maui explains what you get for the extra.

Costs the Tour Price Doesn’t Show

  • Cash for Hana. Stores in Hana generally do not take cards, so bring cash for banana bread, fruit stands and snacks.
  • Tips. The small-group tour notes that gratuity is not included and suggests 15% to 20%. The private van tour also excludes gratuity.
  • Car seats. The private halfway tour asks for a car safety seat for children under 4.
  • Cancellation windows. The private halfway tour needs one week’s notice for a refund, and the small-group tour needs 48 hours.
  • Wet, muddy paths. Most tours include short walks on uneven, sometimes muddy ground. Wear shoes with grip.
