A Na Pali Coast raft tour is a half-day trip on a small, fast inflatable or rigid-hull boat along Kauai’s 17-mile Na Pali Coast, built to go where catamarans cannot: into sea caves and close under waterfalls. Most leave from the west side, from Port Allen or Kikiaola Harbor, and run four to five hours. Here is what a raft or Zodiac tour gives you, what it costs, and when a catamaran is the better choice. Prices checked October 2026.

Quick Answer: Book a raft if you want sea caves and the closest views of the cliffs: the morning Na Pali raft tour from Port Allen runs 4.5 to 5 hours from $177 per person, ages 6 and up, with a snorkel stop in the calmer months. Book a catamaran if you want shade, a restroom and a smoother ride: the Amelia K costs $169 and the Na Pali Snorkel and Sail $235 with meals. From November to March, winter swell usually cancels snorkeling on the raft.

Fun Fact

  • Coastline: 17 miles of cliffs up to about 4,000 feet
  • Raft tour: from $177, 4.5 to 5 hours, ages 6+
  • Catamaran: from $169 on the Amelia K
  • Sea caves: only small boats can enter, conditions permitting
  • Winter: snorkeling usually off November to March

What a Na Pali Raft or Zodiac Tour Is

The Na Pali Coast on Kauai’s north-west side has no road. You see it by helicopter, on foot along the Kalalau Trail, or by boat. Boat tours leave the west side and run north past Polihale, then along the cliffs, valleys, waterfalls and sea caves before turning back.

Rafts and Zodiacs are small motorized boats, about 25 to 40 feet long, with you sitting on the tubes or on bench seats close to the water. Their size is the point: when the sea allows, they nose into sea caves and run in tight under waterfalls. The trade-off is a fast, bouncy, wet ride with little or no shade and no restroom.

Catamarans like the Amelia K offer shade, restrooms and a smoother ride along the Na Pali Coast.

The Morning Na Pali Raft Tour from Port Allen

The morning Na Pali raft tour with Kauai Offshore Adventures leaves the Port Allen Marina Center in Eleele at 7:30am on the 37-foot Naiad super raft Kauai Voyager I. Check-in opens 45 minutes before and closes 15 minutes before departure for the captain’s safety briefing.

The raft runs north past Polihale, where spinner dolphins often play, then along the full coast past the Kalalau valley’s fluted cliffs, entering sea caves and passing under waterfalls when conditions allow. In the calmer months it stops to snorkel on a reef where green sea turtles are common. From November to March, winter swell usually rules out snorkeling, and the captain uses the time to go further toward Ke’e Beach or to look for humpback whales on the way back.

It runs 4.5 to 5 hours, from $177 to $197 per person on the operator’s site (the child rate covers ages 6 to 12). Changes and cancellations need 48 hours’ notice by phone for groups of one to four.

Choose the raft if adventure and closeness are the point and everyone is comfortable on a bumpy boat. Choose a catamaran if you are traveling with young children or older relatives, want lunch and drinks on board, or get seasick easily. Rafts are generally not suitable for anyone pregnant or with back or neck problems, so check the operator’s rules. Our Na Pali Coast tours compared lists every option side by side.

Summer versus Winter on the Na Pali Coast

Summer, roughly April to October, brings the calmest seas, the best chance of entering sea caves and reliable snorkel stops. Winter brings big north swell: raft snorkel stops are usually cancelled, sea cave entries are less likely, and some days the trip turns back early. Winter does add humpback whales, which raft and catamaran tours often see from December to March. See our Kauai whale watching guide for dedicated whale tours.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Swimsuit, towel and a dry layer. You will get wet.
  • Reef-safe lotion sunscreen and a hat that fits snugly.
  • Motion sickness tablets. Take them the night before and the morning of the tour.
  • A waterproof phone pouch or camera. Spray reaches everything on a raft.
  • Pack light. Space is tight and bags get wet.

Practicalities

  • Start early. Port Allen is about 20 minutes from Poipu and 45 minutes or more from Lihue; check-in starts at 6:45am for the 7:30am raft.
  • Park at the bottom of the marina center. The gravel lot at Port Allen Marina Center is the tour parking.
  • Book early in your stay. Ocean conditions cancel trips, and an early booking leaves time to rebook.
  • Eat a light breakfast. A full stomach and a bouncy raft do not mix.
  • Read the cancellation rules. Port Allen needs 48 hours’ notice for small groups, 72 hours for 5 to 9 guests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a raft or catamaran better for the Na Pali Coast?

A raft is better for sea caves and close-up views; a catamaran is better for comfort, shade, meals and young children. Rafts are fast, bouncy and wet.

The morning raft tour from Port Allen costs $177 to $197 per person on the operator’s site, with the child rate for ages 6 to 12.

Can you go into sea caves on the Na Pali Coast?

Yes, on a raft or Zodiac when the sea allows. Entry is decided by the captain on the day and is most likely in summer.
