Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.
Hawaii has a reputation for costing a fortune, and the flights and the hotels earn it. The activities do not. Of the 187 priced tours on this site, 46 are under $100 and 88 are under $150 — and the cheapest thing we sell is a surfboard for eight dollars.
Quick Answer: Eighty-eight bookable Hawaii activities cost under $150, and forty-six cost under $100. The cheapest is a North Shore surfboard rental at $8.00. A full-day Oahu circle island coach tour is $79.00. A catamaran sail is $79.00. Oahu has by far the deepest budget inventory; Kauai has almost none.
TL;DR
- Cheapest thing we sell: $8.00 surfboard rental, North Shore Oahu
- Best value full day: $79.00 AllStar circle island tour, nine hours
- Cheapest boat: $79.00 North Shore catamaran sail
- Cheapest on Maui: $26.50 keiki t-shirt painting; $53.00 cocktail class for adults
- The outlier: on Kauai only group surf lessons come in under $150, from $89
Under $50: the genuinely cheap end
| Activity | Island | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Surfboard rental, North Shore | Oahu | $8.00 |
| Surfboard rental, Waikiki | Oahu | $10.00 |
| Surfboard rental, own pace | Oahu | $15.00 |
| Color Me Tee keiki t-shirt painting | Maui | $26.50 |
| Odysea board rental (9ft) | Oahu | $30.00 |
| Outrigger canoe surfing, Waikiki | Oahu | $48.00 |
The outrigger canoe at $48.00 is the one to notice. You are paddled out past the Waikiki break in a six-person canoe with a steersman, and you surf back in on it — three or four rides in about an hour. It is the oldest form of surfing in these islands and it requires no skill whatsoever, which is a rare combination.
Board rentals at $8 to $15 are the cheapest possible way to spend a Hawaii afternoon, with the obvious caveat that they assume you can already surf. If you cannot, that is what the $90 to $100 lessons in the next tier are for — our surfboard rental guide covers which board to ask for.

$50 to $100: where the value actually sits
| Activity | Island | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Art of Mixology cocktail class | Maui | $53.00 |
| Prison Break escape room | Maui | $60.00 |
| Kayak, SUP & beach gear, Kailua | Oahu | $69.00 |
| Wai Kai wave pool session | Oahu | $75.00 |
| North Shore catamaran sail | Oahu | $79.00 |
| AllStar circle island tour, 9 hours | Oahu | $79.00 |
| Surf lesson, Haleiwa | Oahu | $90.00 |
| Cacao farm tour & chocolate tasting | Maui | $95.00 |
| Group surf lesson, Kalama Park | Maui | $99.00 |
| Self-guided kayak, Kailua | Oahu | $99.00 |
Two entries in that table are doing something the rest are not. The $79.00 circle island tour is a nine-hour day covering 120 miles and six or seven stops — under nine dollars an hour, and cheaper than most one-day car hires once you add petrol and parking. We assessed it properly in is a circle island tour worth a full day.
The $99.00 self-guided kayak in Kailua gets you to the Mokulua Islands, which is the postcard image most people associate with a boat tour costing three times as much. You paddle it yourself, which is the entire saving. See our Kailua kayaking guide for the crossing conditions.
$100 to $150: still budget by Hawaii standards
| Activity | Island | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Waikiki sunset cruise with tasting menu | Oahu | $105.00 |
| South Maui turtle reef kayak & snorkel | Maui | $109.00 |
| Volcano Park shore excursion | Big Island | $125.00 |
| Turtle Town snorkel for beginners | Maui | $129.00 |
| Turtle Canyon snorkel | Oahu | $131.00 |
| Sunset & manta ray snorkel combo | Big Island | $135.00 |
| Morning catamaran sail & snorkel | Oahu | $139.00 |
| Honolulu Sites & Bites food tour | Oahu | $144.52 |
The $135.00 manta ray snorkel is the best value on this entire page and it is not close. Twelve-foot wingspans, resident animals rather than migratory ones, and a sighting record that makes it one of very few wildlife encounters in Hawaii worth booking in advance. Full briefing in our manta ray guide.
Why Oahu is the budget island and Kauai is not
Look back at those three tables and the distribution is obvious. Oahu carries most of the sub-$100 inventory. Maui carries a decent share. The Big Island appears twice. Kauai does not appear at all — its only experiences under $150 are group surf lessons, from $89 at Poʻipu Beach.
This is not a pricing accident. Oahu has volume: more operators, more competition, and enough visitor traffic to sustain a $79 coach tour. Kauai’s signature experiences are helicopters, boat charters and dive packages, all of which have a hard cost floor no amount of competition can push under $150.
The practical conclusion is to budget by island rather than by trip. A week on Oahu can run on $80 a day of activities. A week on Kauai cannot, and pretending otherwise leads to a disappointing trip rather than a cheap one. Which island is right for you is worth reading with this in mind.
Four ways to spend less without doing less
Rent instead of booking a lesson — if you already can. A $10 board and a free beach is the same ocean a $100 lesson uses.
Go self-guided where the water is calm. Kailua at $99.00 versus a guided tour at $140.00 to $179.00 is the clearest example on the site.
Book the long day, not the short one. A nine-hour $79.00 tour is better value per hour than almost any half-day product.
Watch the shoulder months. Availability and pricing both ease outside the December-to-March and June-to-August peaks — see best time to visit Hawaii.
