TWO PARKS IN ONE DAY
Haleakala National Park has two separate districts that most visitors never connect: the summit, and Kipahulu down on the coast. This tour links them by driving the rarely travelled back route through Kaupo rather than the Road to Hana, hiking the Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls in Kipahulu (3 to 4 hours), then climbing to the summit to finish with sunset.
THE ROUTE
After pickup and a Safeway stop in Kahului, you drive through upcountry Kula past the Maui Winery at Ulupalakua, with an optional stop at the Ulupalakua honey bee sanctuary. The road crosses the untouched Kaupo lands with photo stops and churches more than 150 years old, and stops at Laulima Organic Farm before the Pipiwai hike. After a food stop in Kula or Pukalani, the drive climbs the summit highway to Hosmer’s Grove, known for native honeycreepers such as the i’iwi and apapane, then Leleiwi Overlook, the 10,023-foot summit at Pu’u’ula’ula, and sunset from Keonehe’ehe’e Overlook.
