WHO IT IS FOR
Beginners, and families with young children above all: Sea & Board Sports Hawaii takes participants from age 3, well below the 16-and-over floor that most North Shore group lessons set. The session runs two hours from their base at Haleiwa (API), and the operator’s stated priority is safety and making sure everyone actually catches waves, rather than drilling technique. Instructors cover the fundamentals – reading the surf zone, surfing etiquette, timing, and the transition from paddling to standing – and tune the session to the group in front of them. Two practical warnings the operator gives directly: they do not recommend taking an Uber, Lyft or taxi out to the North Shore, and there are no lockers or storage on site, so leave valuables behind.
Consider instead: North Shore Ohana’s open group lesson is the same $120 at Chun’s Reef, but 90 minutes and 16-and-over, so it is not an option for families with children. For undivided attention, Ohana’s 1:1 is $225 and Go Nuts Hawaii’s is $239.
