Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.
It rains in Hawaii more than the brochures admit, and less than a wet morning makes it feel. Most of the islandsβ rain is local and short: the windward sides catch the trade-wind showers while the leeward coasts stay dry. So the first answer to a rainy day is often a drive, and the second is a booking that does not care about the weather.
Quick Answer: When it rains in Hawaii, first check the other side of the island: Kona, Kihei, Wailea, Poβipu and Waikiki are typically drier than Hilo, Hana, Hanalei and windward Oahu. If the rain is island-wide, book something under cover or rain-proof. On Maui: the Prison Break escape room ($60, 60 minutes), the Art of Mixology cocktail class ($53, ages 21+) or keiki t-shirt painting ($26.50). On Oahu: the Pearl Harbor battleships tour ($116.99) or a private Mix Plate food tour by vehicle ($699 for four). The AllStar Oahu circle island tour ($79) runs rain or shine.
TL;DR
- First move: drive to the leeward, drier side of the island
- Maui: escape room $60, cocktail class $53, keiki t-shirt painting $26.50
- Oahu: Pearl Harbor $116.99, private food tour $699 for four, circle island $79 rain or shine
- Big Island: the volcano park is cooler and wetter anyway β bring a layer and go
- Avoid on a wet forecast: helicopters, Haleakala sunrise and the Road to Hana in heavy rain
Why rain in Hawaii is usually a local problem
Hawaiiβs trade winds blow from the northeast. They push moist air against the mountains, where it rises, cools and falls as rain on the windward slopes. By the time the air crosses to the leeward side, most of the moisture is gone. The result is two climates on every island, often less than an hour apart.
In practice: on the Big Island, Hilo is wet and Kona is dry. On Maui, Hana and the windward coast are wet while Kihei and Wailea are among the driest places in the state. On Kauai, Hanalei on the north shore is wet and Poβipu on the south is not. On Oahu, Kailua and Kaneohe catch showers that Waikiki and Ko Olina often miss. Our best time to visit Hawaii guide covers the seasonal pattern, and which island is right for you covers the rest.

Maui: under-cover bookings
| Activity | Where | Length | Price | Ages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prison Break Escape Room | Whalers Village, Kaβanapali | 60 min | $60 pp | Ages 7+ counted; 0β6 free; one adult 16+ required |
| Art of Mixology Class | Alaloa Lounge | 1 hour | $53 | 21+ |
| Color Me Tee | Ritz-Carlton Kapalua | About 90 min | $26.50 | 2β10, with an adult |
| Kuβia Estate Cacao Farm Tour | Lahaina factory and farm | 1.5 hours | $95 | 3+ |
The escape room is the best rainy-day family booking on Maui: 60 minutes inside a fictional West Maui County Prison, players starting split between two cells, and a per-person price that falls as your group grows. It is at Whalers Village in Kaβanapali, so a dry spell afterwards puts you straight on the beach.
For adults, the Art of Mixology class builds three or four cocktails with local honey and passion fruit; book at least 24 hours ahead. For small children, Color Me Tee has ages 2 to 10 painting their own shirt. The cacao farm is outdoors, with a tasting in the estateβs tree hale and 20-plus minutes on uneven mulched ground, so it suits drizzle better than a downpour. Oahu: history, food and the coach that runs rain or shine
| Activity | Length | Price | Rain notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pearl Harbor Battleships Tour | 8β9 hours | $116.99 adult | Visitor center and memorials, but open decks and a Navy boat that can be suspended |
| Oahu Mix Plate Tour | 6 hours | $699 for four | Private vehicle, minimal walking |
| Honolulu Sites and Bites | 6.5 hours | $144.52 | Walking tour; bring a light rain layer |
| AllStar Circle Island Tour | 9 hours | $79 | Runs 8am to 5:30pm, rain or shine, in an air-conditioned minibus |
Pearl Harbor is Oahuβs default wet-weather day, and with reason: much of it is museum and memorial. It is not fully indoors, though. Much of the day is on open decks, and Navy boat service to the Arizona Memorial can be suspended without notice. Our Pearl Harbor tours guide explains the timing.
The private Mix Plate tour is the most rain-proof food day on the island: a private vehicle, minimal walking, and plate lunches, poke and shave ice at local stops. The Chinatown walking tour is a better sunny-day choice; both are compared in our Oahu food tours guide. If you would rather keep sightseeing, the $79 circle island tour goes regardless, and weather on one coast is often clear on the next; see whether a full circle island day is worth it.

Big Island and Kauai: work with the weather
On the Big Island, a wet morning in Kona is rare; a wet day at Kilauea is normal. The Volcano Park shore excursion warns that park weather is cooler and wetter than the harbor, and volcano tours run in it, so pack a layer and go. The lava tube, at least, is dry. Our Kona vs Hilo guide explains why the two sides feel like different islands.
On Kauai, head south: if Hanalei is grey, Poβipu is often bright. Waterfalls are fuller after rain, which is some consolation, and a luau is a covered evening regardless of what the afternoon did; see our Kauai luau guide. Book helicopter flights early in your stay, because they are weather-dependent and crater entry needs clear conditions. That leaves room to reschedule; our Kauai tours guide covers the rest.

Bookings to avoid on a wet forecast
Helicopter tours. Flights are weather-dependent and routes into craters and valleys close in cloud. Rebook rather than fly blind; see Hawaii helicopter tours by island.
Haleakala sunrise. A cloud-covered summit is a cold, early start for nothing. Check the summit forecast the day before; what to expect on a sunrise tour explains the timing.
The Road to Hana in heavy rain. The windward side is where the rain falls, streams rise fast, and the road is narrow. Showers are normal there; heavy, persistent rain is a reason to go another day. Read the Road to Hana driving guide first.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is there to do in Hawaii when it rains?
First try the drier side of the island, which is usually under an hour away. For island-wide rain, book under-cover activities: an escape room or cocktail class on Maui, Pearl Harbor or a private food tour on Oahu, or a luau in the evening.
Which side of Maui has the least rain?
South and West Maui. Kihei and Wailea are among the driest parts of Hawaii, while Hana and the windward coast catch most of the trade-wind showers.
Do tours in Hawaii get cancelled for rain?
Some do. Helicopter flights are weather-dependent and at pilot discretion. Others run regardless: the AllStar Oahu circle island tour operates rain or shine. Check each operatorβs policy when booking.
What indoor activities are there on Maui?
The Prison Break escape room at Whalers Village ($60, 60 minutes), the Art of Mixology cocktail class ($53, ages 21+), and Color Me Tee t-shirt painting for children aged 2 to 10 ($26.50).
Is Pearl Harbor a good rainy day activity?
Mostly. The visitor center and memorials are the core of the day, but parts are spent on open decks, and Navy boat service to the Arizona Memorial can be suspended without notice.
Does it rain all day in Hawaii?
Rarely at the beaches most visitors stay on. Rain usually arrives as passing showers on the windward sides, while the leeward coasts stay largely dry.

Rain on the forecast?
