Swimming with dolphins on Oahu means one of two things: a boat tour to see wild dolphins off the Waianae coast, or a supervised session with trained dolphins at a marine park such as Dolphin Quest or Sea Life Park. Since 2021, federal law keeps people at least 50 yards from Hawaiian spinner dolphins, which changes what a wild dolphin tour can offer. Here is how the options compare, what they cost and which suits you. Prices checked October 2026.
Quick Answer: If you want to be guaranteed time in the water with dolphins, that means a marine park: Dolphin Quest at the Kahala resort costs about $295 for a 30-minute encounter, and Sea Life Park’s programs start lower. If you want wild dolphins, take a boat from Waianae on Oahu’s west side: the dolphin watching catamaran costs $179 with snorkeling, a water slide and lunch, and Dolphin Excursions runs smaller trips with marine biologists at $180. Wild spinner dolphins are protected by a 50-yard distance rule.
Fun Fact
- Distance rule: stay 50 yards from spinner dolphins within 2 nautical miles of shore
- Where wild dolphins live: the Waianae coast on Oahu’s west side
- Wild dolphin tours: from $179 with snorkel, lunch and transport
- Marine park encounter: about $295 at Dolphin Quest
- Bonus: turtles on most snorkel stops, whales December to April
What Swimming with Dolphins on Oahu Means Now
Hawaiian spinner dolphins feed offshore at night and rest in calm, shallow bays during the day. For years, tours put snorkelers in the water with resting pods. In 2021 the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) made it illegal to swim with or approach Hawaiian spinner dolphins within 50 yards, in the water or by boat, anywhere within two nautical miles of the main Hawaiian Islands.
So a wild dolphin tour on Oahu today is mainly dolphin watching from the boat, often followed by a snorkel stop with turtles and reef fish. Dolphins sometimes choose to come close to a boat or swimmers, which is allowed as long as people do not approach them. If a tour advertises time in the water near dolphins, ask the operator how it follows the 50-yard rule.
A marine park is the only place on Oahu where in-water time with dolphins is planned and guaranteed. Those dolphins live in managed lagoons and the sessions are run by trainers.

Wild Dolphin Tours from Waianae
Oahu’s west side, the Waianae coast, has resident spinner dolphins and calm morning water, and almost every wild dolphin tour leaves from Waianae Harbor.
The Oahu dolphin watching catamaran is a three-hour trip on the double-decker Poseidon at $179 per adult, tax included. You watch dolphins from the boat, then snorkel with turtles, ride a 21-foot water slide and use paddleboards, with lunch and transport from Waikiki and Ko Olina. If no dolphins are seen, you can rejoin a tour at a discount.
The same operator runs a 3.5-hour morning dolphin tour at $199 per adult from March 1 to October 31, with a 7:30am departure and Waikiki pickup around 5:30 to 6:00am.
Dolphin Excursions keeps it smaller: three hours with up to 16 guests and marine biologist guides, at $180 per adult, with a turtle snorkel and humpbacks from mid-December to March. Wild Side Specialty Tours runs a three-hour west side safari for up to eight with naturalist and biologist guides; its price is shown on the booking calendar.
Dolphin Quest and Sea Life Park
If being in the water with a dolphin is the point of the trip, a marine park is the honest choice.
Dolphin Quest is at The Kahala Hotel and Resort, about 15 minutes’ drive east of Waikiki. As of January 2026, a 30-minute Encounter Deluxe costs about $295 per person for ages 5 and up, a shallow-water Kids’ Aquatic Adventure for ages 5 to 9 costs about $310, and private family sessions start around $1,800.
Sea Life Park, near Waimanalo on the east side, runs shorter and cheaper dolphin programs, with entry-level options around $90 including park admission and longer encounters at higher prices. Check both parks’ own sites for current prices and age limits, which change through the year.
We do not sell either park, and we list them here so you can compare honestly.
Wild or Park: The Real Decision
| Wild dolphin tour | Marine park | |
|---|---|---|
| In the water with dolphins | Not planned; 50-yard rule for spinner dolphins | Yes, guaranteed |
| Price | $179 to $199 with snorkel and lunch | About $90 to $310 per person |
| Time | 3 to 4 hours plus transport | 30 minutes to an hour on site |
| Other wildlife | Turtles, reef fish, whales in winter | Park animals |
| Best for | Seeing dolphins in the wild plus a snorkel day | Kids set on touching or swimming with a dolphin |
Many families do both: a wild dolphin and snorkel tour for the day on the water, and a short park encounter for the child who has been asking about dolphins all year.
What to Wear and Bring
- Swimsuit under your clothes. Wild dolphin tours include a snorkel stop.
- Reef-safe lotion sunscreen and a rash guard.
- Motion sickness tablets. Even calm west side mornings can roll.
- A waterproof phone pouch or GoPro. Dolphins move fast; burst mode helps.
Practicalities
- Expect an early start. Waianae is about an hour from Waikiki, so pickups for morning tours can be 5:30 to 6:00am.
- Book mornings. Dolphins and calm water are most reliable early.
- Check the cancellation window. The Waianae catamaran tours refund with 48 hours’ notice; private charters need 7 days.
- Mind the age limits. The dolphin catamaran does not allow children aged 1 to 2 in the water; Dolphin Quest’s main encounter starts at 5.
