Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Kauai does not have one beginner beach. It has two, on opposite coasts, and which one works depends entirely on the month you arrive.

Quick Answer: Book Poipu on the south shore in winter and Hanalei Bay on the north shore in summer — Hawaiian swell hits north shores from October to April and south shores from May to September, so the calm coast swaps. A group lesson at Poipu is $89 for 90 minutes; one-to-one runs $150. The $240 Hanalei lesson is coaching for surfers who already stand up, not an introduction.

TL;DR

  • Winter (Oct–Apr): Learn at Poipu. The north shore is too big.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Hanalei Bay is mellow and beautiful.
  • Cheapest: Poipu group lesson, $89 for 90 minutes.
  • Private: $150 one-to-one, break chosen on the day.
  • Not for beginners: The $240 elite lesson assumes you can already surf.

Why the right beach changes with the season

This is the single thing that catches visitors out on Kauai. North-facing shores take swell generated by North Pacific storms from roughly October through April. South-facing shores take swell from Southern Hemisphere storms from roughly May through September. When one coast is firing, the other is usually flat.

For a beginner, flat is what you want. So the correct beginner beach on Kauai in January is Poipu, and in July it is often Hanalei Bay — the exact reverse of what a summer visitor might assume from photographs of Hanalei in winter.

Schools know this and move. If an operator insists on a north shore lesson in February, ask why.

What lessons cost on Kauai

LessonPriceLengthWho it suits
Poipu group lesson$891.5 hoursFirst-timers on a budget
Private, one-to-one$1501.5 hoursNervous beginners, fast progress
Hanalei elite coaching$2401.25 hoursSurfers already standing up

Kauai runs slightly cheaper than Oahu at the entry level — $89 against roughly $100–$120 for a comparable group lesson in Waikiki — and considerably more expensive at the top, because the $240 Hanalei session is sold as performance coaching rather than a first lesson.

Is the $240 lesson worth it?

Only if you can already paddle, catch a wave unassisted and stand up. It is billed as coaching rather than a demonstration, which means the hour is spent correcting what you already do rather than teaching you to do it.

Book it if you have plateaued and want someone who surfs Hanalei regularly watching you. Do not book it as your first ever lesson — the $89 group session teaches the same fundamentals every school teaches, and you will get more from the elite hour later.

What to expect on the day

A standard lesson opens with 15 to 20 minutes on the sand: how to lie on the board, where to put your hands, how to pop up, and what to do when you fall. Then you are in the whitewater, which is where beginners actually learn — not out at the break.

Boards are soft-tops, which are forgiving when they hit you, and rash guards are provided. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, which is required by Hawaii state law, and apply it 20 minutes before you get in.

If you are basing yourself on the sunny south shore, our guide to Poipu and South Kauai covers what you can book within easy reach, from beginner surf lessons to Na Pali sails out of Port Allen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kauai a good place to learn to surf?

Yes, provided you pick the right coast for the season. Poipu in winter is one of the gentler beginner beaches in the state. The mistake is assuming Hanalei is the beginner beach year-round because it looks calm in photographs.

How much is a surf lesson on Kauai?

Group lessons start at $89 for 90 minutes at Poipu. Private one-to-one lessons run $150. A specialist coaching hour at Hanalei Bay is $240 and is aimed at surfers who already stand up.

What is the best month to learn to surf on Kauai?

Any month works if you match the coast to the season. For the most forgiving conditions overall, aim for the shoulder months of April, May, September or October, when neither swell pattern is at full strength.

Can children learn to surf on Kauai?

Yes. Most schools take children from around age five to seven, and comfort in water matters more than age. Ask specifically about the student-to-instructor ratio, since that is what determines how closely your child is watched.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be comfortable in water deeper than you can stand, and able to get yourself back to the board after a fall. You do not need to be a fast or stylish swimmer. Tell your instructor honestly — they will position you accordingly.
