Kauai whale watching is a winter boat trip off the island’s south and west shores to see humpback whales, usually two to three hours, from about December to March. Kauai has fewer dedicated whale tours than Maui or Oahu, so most run on small, fast boats: super rafts and Zodiacs from Port Allen, Poipu and Kikiaola Harbor. Here are the whale watches we sell on Kauai, what they cost and which suits you. Prices checked October 2026.

Quick Answer: For most visitors, the Port Allen whale watching raft is the best value: two hours, a hydrophone and snacks, $99 to $119 per person, with four departures a day. If you are staying in Poipu, the Poipu Zodiac whale and dolphin tour leaves from the south shore from $115.50. For your group alone, a private charter from Kikiaola Harbor costs $1,999. Whale season on Kauai is roughly December to March.

Fun Fact

  • Cheapest: Port Allen super raft, from $99
  • Closest to Poipu: the Poipu Zodiac, from $115.50
  • Private: west side raft charter, $1,999
  • Season: about December to March
  • Hear them: all three boats carry a hydrophone

What a Kauai Whale Watch Is

Humpback whales winter in Hawaiian waters from about December to March, and Kauai’s south and west shores are sheltered enough most days for small boats to find them. Kauai tours use rafts and Zodiacs more than big catamarans. You sit low to the water, the boat moves fast between sightings, and every tour we sell drops a hydrophone so you can hear whales singing.

Boats keep at least 100 yards from humpbacks under federal rules. Sightings are common in peak season but never guaranteed; the Poipu operator is explicit that it does not refund if no whales appear.

Poipu, Port Allen or the West Side

Port Allen (Eleele). The Humpback Whale Watching Adventure leaves the Port Allen Marina Center, about 20 minutes west of Poipu. It runs two hours on the Kauai Voyager I super raft at 8:00am, 10:30am, 1:30pm and 4:00pm, with light snacks and cold drinks. Ages 4 and up. The operator’s site lists $99 to $119 depending on age.

Poipu. The Poipu Zodiac tour leaves the small boat harbor on the south shore, so if you are staying in Poipu or Koloa there is almost no drive. It runs about 2 to 2.5 hours on the 25-foot Zodiac Hokupa’a, covering up to 30 miles of coast, and often finds spinner dolphins too. Ages 5 and up, from $115.50. You sit on the tubes, with no shade or restroom.

Kikiaola Harbor (Waimea). Na Pali Experience runs a private whale watch charter from the west side for 2.5 to 3 hours, with snacks, drinks and dry bags. It costs $1,999 for the boat and suits families or groups who want the trip to themselves.

Raft or Zodiac: The Real Decision

Both are small, fast and wet. The difference is comfort and where you start. The Port Allen raft is larger, with more structure and four sailings a day, which makes it the easier choice for families with kids from age 4. The Poipu Zodiac is smaller and more of an adventure, and it saves a drive if you are on the south shore. Neither suits anyone with back or neck problems or who is pregnant, so check the operator’s health rules before booking.

Whales on a Na Pali Coast Tour

If you only have one boat day, a Na Pali Coast tour in winter is also a whale watch. The Na Pali Snorkel and Sail lists humpbacks from December through April, and the morning Na Pali raft tour switches from snorkeling to sightseeing in winter, which can include whale watching on the way home. See our Na Pali Coast tours compared for the full list.

Whale Watching from Shore on Kauai

You can see spouts and breaches from land in peak season. Good spots include the Poipu shoreline on the south side and Kilauea Point on the north shore, home to the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge; check the refuge’s hours and entry rules before you go. Bring binoculars and go on a calm morning, when spouts are easier to see.

What to Wear and Bring

  • A rain or splash jacket. You will get wet on a raft or Zodiac.
  • Lotion sunscreen, not spray. Na Pali Experience does not allow spray sunscreen on board.
  • Sandals you can slip off. The private charter is a barefoot tour.
  • A reusable water bottle and motion sickness tablets.

Practicalities

  • Check in early. Port Allen asks for 45 minutes before departure, Na Pali Experience 30 minutes and the Poipu Zodiac 15 minutes; late arrivals can lose their seat.
  • Read the cancellation rules. Port Allen needs 48 hours’ notice for 1 to 4 guests; the Poipu Zodiac needs 24 hours.
  • Pay for parking at Kikiaola. The harbor lot charges $20 per car.
  • Go early in the season or book ahead. Small boats fill fast in January and February.
