North Shore whale watching is a winter boat trip from Haleiwa Harbor on Oahu’s north coast to look for humpback whales, usually for two hours, from December to April. It is quieter than Waikiki, with a handful of boats instead of dozens, and the backdrop is the North Shore’s surf breaks and mountains instead of hotels. Here are the North Shore whale watches we sell, what they cost and how to choose. Prices checked October 2026.

Quick Answer: For most people the best North Shore whale watch is the Ho’o Nanea sailing catamaran from Haleiwa Harbor at $99 per adult, with morning, afternoon and sunset sailings. For a small private group, Go Adventure Hawaii runs a two-hour whale safari at $400 for one to four guests, and Deep Blue Eco Tours adds a marine biologist for the same price. Haleiwa is about an hour’s drive from Waikiki, and winter surf can cancel trips.

Fun Fact

  • Only sailing catamaran: the Ho’o Nanea is the North Shore’s only commercial sailing cat
  • Price: $99 per adult on the sail, $400 for a small private boat
  • Departs: Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor
  • Drive from Waikiki: about an hour
  • Season: December to April

What a North Shore Whale Watch Is

Humpbacks spend the winter all around Oahu, and the north coast gets its share. Boats leave Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor, in the North Shore’s main town, and run along the coast between the surf breaks and deeper water. Operators say whales are often seen within minutes of leaving the harbor in peak season.

The difference from Waikiki is the number of boats. On the south shore, dozens of tours share the water in February. On the North Shore you may see one or two other boats all morning, and the views are of mountains, beaches and big winter surf rather than hotel towers.

How the North Shore Tours Differ

Sailing catamaran. North Shore Catamaran Charters runs the Ho’o Nanea, which it describes as the only commercial sailing catamaran on the North Shore. Choose a morning sail at 8:30am or 11:00am, an afternoon sail or a sunset sail. All three last two hours and cost $99 per adult. It is a shared boat, quiet under sail and steadier than a small powerboat.

Small powerboat. Go Adventure Hawaii’s whale safari takes up to six people for two hours, priced at $400 for one to four guests. A small boat moves quickly to wherever whales are active and puts you close to the water. Go Adventure also runs a sunset whale watching trip on the same terms.

Private with a marine biologist. Deep Blue Eco Tours runs two-hour private trips from December to March with a marine biologist crew member explaining what the whales are doing. It costs $400 for the boat.

Sail or Small Boat: The Real Decision

Pick the sail if you want a calm, scenic trip at a per-person price, especially at sunset, or if anyone in your group is prone to seasickness. Pick a small private boat if you are a group of three to six, want to stay with active whales as long as the captain allows, or want commentary pitched at your group, which is where the marine biologist trip stands out.

On price, the two meet in the middle. Four adults on the sail pay $396, almost exactly what the private safari costs for the whole boat.

Winter Surf Can Cancel Trips

Whale season is also big wave season on the North Shore. When a large swell hits, the harbor mouth can be unsafe and captains cancel. Book your North Shore trip early in your stay so you have time to rebook, and check the forecast the day before. If the north side is closed, south shore tours from Waikiki usually still run, and our Oahu whale watching comparison lists them.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Layers. Winter mornings and evenings on the North Shore can be cool and windy.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat that will not blow off.
  • A camera with zoom. Boats keep at least 100 yards from humpbacks.
  • Motion sickness tablets. Winter swell makes the north side rougher than the south.

Practicalities

  • Allow an hour from Waikiki. Traffic through Wahiawa and around Haleiwa can be slow on winter weekends when the surf is up.
  • Park early. Haleiwa Harbor parking fills up; arrive 30 minutes before departure.
  • Make a day of it. Pair a morning sail with lunch in Haleiwa town and the beaches along Kamehameha Highway.
  • Check the age rules. The sunset sail sets its adult rate at age 13 and up; small boats take up to six people including children.
