WHAT THE SURF LESSON INVOLVES
The surf instructor will accompany your small child and assist them with the physical challenge of paddling in and out of the waves. When standing up and riding the wave, the instructor is a helping hand operating as a team. When standing up or falling we do it together to assist the child on the surfboard and navigating through out of the waves. This 1.1/2 hour experience consist of a land lesson, safety briefing and a lot of wave riding!
HOW IT RUNS
You meet at North Shore Ohana School of Surfing – Chuns Reef Beach, Chuns Reef Beach, Haleiwa, HI, 96712. All Gear provided rash guard, leash and softtop or epoxy surfboard. WHO IT IS FOR
Parents of small children, from age 2 up to 12. This is a tandem lesson, which means the instructor is on the board with your child rather than watching from alongside: they take on the physical work of paddling in and out through the waves, and when it is time to stand they do it together, steadying the child on the board and guiding them back out. That makes it the right choice for a child too young or too small to handle a board independently. The session is 1.5 hours at Chun’s Reef Beach, Haleiwa, HI 96712, opens with a land lesson and safety briefing, and includes rash guard, leash and a softtop or epoxy board. North Shore Ohana refund the booking if you are unhappy with the experience. Their winter and summer surf spots double as snorkel spots where green sea turtles are common.
Consider instead: once a child is 7 or over and can surf independently, the private group lessons take them from that age – $115 for three to five people, $120 for six to eight. For a family that wants a fuller morning, North Shore Surf Girls’ three-hour turtle tour is $189.95 and also welcomes children under 8.
