Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

The question parents actually ask about surf lessons is not where or how much. It is: will they take my child? The answer depends almost entirely on the format. Group lessons usually start at ten. Private lessons usually start at five. And on Maui, one school puts children as young as one on a board, with the guide riding alongside them.

Quick Answer: Most group surf lessons in Hawaii set a minimum age of 10, though a few start younger: 5 at the Kalama Beach Park group lesson in Kihei, Maui, and 8 at Po’ipu Beach on Kauai. Private lessons typically start at 5, Maui Wave Riders in Kihei teach from 4, and Go Tum Surfing’s private lesson on Maui starts at 3. For ages 1 to 6, the Baby Surf Experience on Maui is tandem: the guide rides the board with your child for one hour, at $225.

TL;DR

  • Youngest: ages 1–6, tandem, Maui, $225
  • Youngest solo private: age 3, Go Tum Surfing, Maui, $200
  • Typical private minimum: age 5
  • Typical group minimum: age 10, with exceptions at 5 (Kihei) and 8 (Po’ipu)
  • Rule of thumb: under 10, book private β€” several schools require it

Two further rules matter on Oahu. Waikiki Beach Services require guests aged 12 and under to take a one-to-one lesson ($150), and the Wai Kai wave pool requires surfers to be at least 10 and 90 lb.

Under six: tandem is the only real option

Below about five, children are not really taking a lesson; they are riding a wave with an adult. The Baby Surf Experience at Kalama Park in Kihei is built entirely around that: ages one to six only, a CPR-certified toddler surf guide riding the board with your child, a wetsuit and life vest worn throughout, and a one-hour maximum. The operator is explicit that the hour is deliberate, because it is about the limit of a small child’s attention and tolerance for cold water.

On Oahu, the Keiki Tandem lesson at Chun’s Reef on the North Shore does the same for 90 minutes at $200, with a land lesson and safety briefing before the instructor rides with your child. For other toddler-friendly days, see Maui with young kids: tours by age.

Ages five to nine: private, or a school that allows it

This is the age where parents get turned away. Royal Hawaiian require children under 10 to book private, and Surf Maui 101 take nine-year-olds in the group but five-year-olds only in private. The reason is the same everywhere: a young child needs an instructor beside them constantly, which a group lesson cannot provide.

The cost difference is smaller than it looks for families. Surf Maui 101’s private rate falls to $149 per person for four to six people. Soul Surfing’s family lesson at Ukumehame is $120 per person for three to five, with four students to a coach, on a beach quieter than the Kihei breaks. Maui Wave Riders take children from four in a semi-private group of two to six from your own party. And one group lesson breaks the pattern: the Kalama Beach Park group lesson takes children from five at $120. More on the trade-off in private vs group lessons.

Ten and up: the group lessons open

From ten, almost every group lesson in Hawaii is available, and prices drop to $89–$124. The cheapest is the Po’ipu Beach group lesson on Kauai at $89, which also takes eight- and nine-year-olds and serves adults and children in the same session. Kauai Surf School in Poipu is the strictest at 12, though younger children may join when a parent participates or supervises from the beach.

Each island guide goes deeper on where to learn: Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

Readiness is about more than age

Swimming. Most schools require children to be comfortable swimming in the ocean; Po’ipu states it outright, and Surf N Sea in Haleiwa welcome children who can swim when a parent accompanies them. Tandem sessions are the exception, because the child wears a life vest.

Cold and attention. Even in Hawaii, a small child gets cold after an hour in the water. A shorter private session usually beats a longer group one.

Wanting to do it. If a child is unsure, try something lower-stakes first: outrigger canoe surfing from age five rides waves with no skill required. When they are ready, what happens in a first surf lesson is worth reading together.

Travelling with children? Our guide to the Big Island with kids sorts every bookable activity in Kona and Hilo by minimum age.

First-timers start with the Wai Kai beginner lesson, 45 minutes for $149, ages 10 and up.

On the west side, surf lessons in Lahaina run two hours, from $85.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the youngest age for surf lessons in Hawaii?

Age one, in a tandem session: the Baby Surf Experience on Maui takes children aged one to six, with the guide riding the board with them. The youngest solo private lesson is from age three with Go Tum Surfing on Maui.

Can a 5-year-old take a surf lesson in Hawaii?

Yes, usually in a private lesson. Many Maui schools teach from five, including Soul Surfing, Keep It Simple and the Private Surf Safari, and the Kalama Beach Park group lesson in Kihei also takes five-year-olds.

Why do group surf lessons require children to be 10?

Because a young child needs an instructor beside them the whole time, which a group lesson cannot guarantee. Schools such as Royal Hawaiian require under-10s to book private for safety.

Can parents and children take a surf lesson together?

Yes. The Ukumehame family lesson on Maui is built for three to five people with one coach, the Po’ipu group lesson on Kauai serves adults and children together, and Kona Mike’s ohana lesson on the Big Island is a private group.

Which Hawaiian island is best for kids learning to surf?

Maui has the most options for young children, from tandem sessions at age one to private lessons from three and a group lesson from five.

Do kids need to be able to swim for a surf lesson?

For most lessons, yes: schools ask that children are comfortable swimming in the ocean. Tandem sessions for toddlers are the exception, with a life vest worn throughout.
