The Pearl Harbor virtual reality experience runs four 360-degree films at the National Park Service VR Center, from $11 on its own or bundled with the narrated audio tour.
The VR Center is a small building in the courtyard of the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center at 1 Arizona Memorial Place, about eleven miles west of Waikiki. It is separate from the museums, separate from the shoreline path, and separate from the boat out to the USS Arizona Memorial. What it offers is the one thing no exhibit case can: standing inside the morning rather than reading about it.
The four experiences
You choose which film to watch. Each runs roughly 10 to 15 minutes.
- Air Raid Pearl Harbor. The timeline of the attack, seen from the deck of the USS Utah as the first wave arrives. Three minutes in, the signal went out that would outlive everyone who heard it: Air Raid Pearl Harbor, this is no drill.
- Skies Over Pearl. The attack from the other side, from the cockpit of a Japanese fighter leaving the carrier Akagi 230 miles north of Oahu. It covers the details rarely told, including how the pilots held radio silence and followed a Honolulu radio signal to find the island.
- Walk the Deck of the USS Arizona. The main deck as it was on the morning of December 7, 1941, before the armor-piercing bomb, reconstructed so you can turn and look in any direction.
- Explore the USS Arizona Today. The 608-foot hull as she rests on the harbor floor now, including the guns that were never fired in battle. Diving here is strictly controlled because it is a war grave, so for almost everyone this is the only way to see it.
Standalone or combo: the arithmetic
This is the decision the page exists to help with, and it is simpler than it looks once the numbers sit next to each other.
- VR Center on its own, $11. One experience, 10 to 15 minutes. Right if your Pearl Harbor day is already planned and you just want to add the headset.
- Deluxe Combo, $21. One VR experience plus the full 29-stop narrated tour of the Visitor Center, museums, and shoreline. The audio tour effectively costs $10 more than booking VR alone, which is the cheapest way to add several hours of narration to the day.
- Admiral’s VIP Package, $35. The narrated tour plus all four VR experiences. Worth it if Pearl Harbor is the reason you came to Oahu rather than one stop on a longer list.
Budget the time honestly. Four experiences at 10 to 15 minutes each, plus a self-paced audio tour, plus queueing on a busy morning, is a half day rather than a quick stop.
Where it is and how check-in works
Check in at the VR Center with your confirmation between 8am and 3pm. It sits in the Visitor Center courtyard, close to the Narrated Tour Desk where the audio tour devices are handed out, so combo tickets do not mean walking between sites. The Visitor Center bag policy applies across the whole campus: no bags of any kind clear security, including camera bags, so carry only what pockets hold. Staffed baggage check is available near the entrance for a fee.
What this ticket does not cover
The virtual reality experiences are presented in English only, while the audio tour runs in nine languages. Neither the VR nor the combo tickets include the boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, which is a separate National Park Service ticket, free of charge and booked through the National Park Service. Nothing here is required in order to take it. If you do not hold an advance Arizona reservation, join the standby queue when you arrive.
Pu’uloa before the footage
Long before it was a naval base, this water was Pu’uloa and Wai Momi, the water of pearl, named for the oyster beds that filled it. It is a wahi pana, a storied place, and its mo’olelo runs centuries deeper than one Sunday morning. Virtual reality is very good at putting you inside a single day and very bad at telling you what came before it, which is worth holding onto while you have the headset on. There is an ‘olelo no’eau that fits: “Nana i ke kumu”, look to the source.
