Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

West Maui is where many visitors stay and where many assume they have to drive from for anything worth doing. Not so. Whale boats load straight off Kaanapali Beach, two luaus run on the oceanfront, and the quiet surf breaks south of Lahaina are some of the best places on Maui to learn.

Quick Answer: From West Maui you can book whale watching off Kaanapali Beach ($89, December to April), surf lessons at Ukumehame or the Lahaina Breakwall ($115 to $250), a Kaanapali luau from about $186, and the Ku’ia Estate cacao farm tour ($95). Molokini, Haleakala and the Road to Hana still mean a drive.

TL;DR

  • On the beach: Kaanapali whale watching, $89 or $1,599 private
  • Surf: Group from $115; private $220 to $250
  • Evenings: Myths of Maui and Huaka’i luaus, Kaanapali
  • Rain plan: Escape room at Whalers Village; keiki T-shirt painting at Kapalua

A note on Lahaina

The August 2023 wildfire destroyed much of historic Lahaina town, and the area is still rebuilding. This guide sticks to activities that are operating and bookable, most of them in Kaanapali, Kapalua and the beach parks south of town. Check access with the operator when you book anything that meets in Lahaina itself.

Whale watching straight off Kaanapali Beach

Most Maui whale trips leave from Maalaea or Kihei, a 45-minute drive from Kaanapali. The Kaanapali Beach whale watch loads from the sand instead: two hours, $89 per person, ages 2 to 99, groups of up to 22, with guaranteed sightings or you go again free. Expect wet feet boarding.

For families or reunions, the private Kaanapali charter puts your group on its own boat for two hours at $1,599. Season runs roughly December to April; our Maui whale watching comparison sets all five Maui options side by side.

Surf lessons on the west side

The beaches between Lahaina and Maalaea, especially Ukumehame, are known for gentle, uncrowded waves. That makes West Maui one of the better places on the island for a first lesson.

Luaus on the Kaanapali coast

Two luaus run on the Kaanapali oceanfront. The Myths of Maui Luau at the Royal Lahaina Resort is the longest-running luau on Maui, with general seating currently listed at about $186 per adult. The Huaka’i Luau at Kaanapali Beach runs about $203 for general admission and $237 for VIP seating.

Our Maui luau guide compares these with the south-side shows on price, seating and setting.

Getting to and from the airport

Kahului Airport is 45 to 60 minutes from West Maui. A private transfer for up to five is listed from $140 per vehicle; confirm the current rate at booking. Our guide to Kahului airport transfers compares the options. If you are splitting your stay, South Maui is the other side of the island’s base.

Landing at Kahului? A lei greeting at the airport is the traditional start to a Maui trip; our guide to airport lei greetings on Maui covers what they cost and how the meet-up works.
