WHAT THE LESSON INVOLVES
A beginner group lesson run off Poipu, capped at four students per instructor. That ceiling matters more than it sounds: at five or six to one, a beginner spends most of the session waiting to be pushed into a wave rather than riding one.
Lessons run at 8am, 10am, 12pm and 2pm, with an extra 4pm slot through the summer. The earlier departures are usually cleanest, before the trade winds build across the south shore.
HOW IT RUNS
You meet at the Beach Activity Hut on the Kiahuna Plantation Resort in Poipu. The 90 minutes covers instruction on the sand and then guided time in the water. A surfboard and a UV-protective surf shirt are provided.
