Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Kauai does not really do shore snorkelling the way Oahu and Maui do. What it has instead is a coastline no other island can match.

Quick Answer: Snorkelling on Kauai is almost entirely boat snorkelling along the Na Pali Coast, because that is where the clear water and the sea caves are. Two trips run it: the Amelia K catamaran at $199 and a trade wind snorkel and sail at $275, both five hours. Summer is the season — winter swell on the north shore shuts the coast down.

TL;DR

  • Cheaper: Amelia K catamaran, $199, five hours, sea caves included.
  • Under sail: Trade wind snorkel and sail, $275, five hours.
  • Season: Summer. North shore swell closes Na Pali in winter.
  • You are paying for: The coastline as much as the reef. Cliffs run to 3,500 feet.
  • Sea sickness: Five hours on open water. Take something beforehand if you are prone.

Why Kauai snorkelling means getting on a boat

Oahu has Turtle Canyon a short ride off Waikiki. Maui has Molokini and Turtle Town. Kauai’s equivalent is the Na Pali Coast, and it is not reachable from shore — there is no road along it, and the coastal trail stops well short.

So the trips are longer, at five hours against 90 minutes to three, and they are as much coastal sightseeing as snorkelling. The cliffs run to around 3,500 feet, fluted and green, with sea caves at the waterline that boats enter when the swell allows.

If you want the coast without getting in the water, the formats are compared in Na Pali Coast tours: helicopter, boat or hiking.

Na Pali is only reachable by sea or air, which is why every snorkel trip here is a boat day.

The $76 gap is mostly about how you travel rather than what you see. A catamaran is steadier, which matters over five hours if anyone in your party is prone to seasickness. Sailing under the cliffs is quieter and, for some people, the entire point.

Season is not optional here

North-facing Hawaiian shores take swell from roughly October through April. Na Pali faces north-west. In winter the swell makes the coast unsafe for small boats, so trips are cancelled, shortened or moved south.

Plan Na Pali snorkelling for May to September. It is the same seasonal logic that decides which coast you learn to surf on — see learning to surf on Kauai.

If you are on Kauai in winter and set on getting in the water, expect south shore alternatives rather than the Na Pali trip you saw in photographs.

What you actually see

Reef fish, and often Hawaiian green sea turtles — the honu are as common here as elsewhere in the chain, and the rules are the same ten-foot distance. Spinner dolphins frequently escort boats along the coast, and between December and April humpbacks are possible, though that is also the season the trips struggle to run.

For turtles specifically, and where to find them across all four islands, see where to swim with sea turtles in Hawaii.

How it compares to the other islands

Kauai is the most expensive and the most scenic. Oahu’s Turtle Canyon trips are shorter and cheaper with very reliable turtles. Maui’s Molokini and Turtle Town start around $109 and give you clearer water than most of Kauai.

Book Kauai snorkelling because you want Na Pali. If pure reef time is the goal, Maui does it for half the price.
