Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

No waves, no paddling, no fitness requirement. eFoiling is the rare Hawaii watersport that does not punish you for being a beginner.

Quick Answer: An eFoil is a board with a hydrofoil wing underneath and an electric motor driving it — the wing generates lift, the board rises clear of the surface, and you fly above the water rather than on it. Because it is powered, there is no paddling and no wave to catch. Oahu sessions run from $149 in a group to $260.10 private, and most instructors aim to have you flying in your first session.

TL;DR

  • Cheapest: Group session, $149, roughly 1.5–2 hours.
  • Solo taster: $199 for about 1–1.5 hours.
  • Learn it properly: $249, 1.5–2 hours — the extra time is the point.
  • Private with kit listed: $260.10 at Ke’ehi South Beach, vest, helmet and whistle provided.
  • Fitness: Far less than surfing. The motor does the work.

What is an eFoil, exactly?

A hydrofoil is a wing mounted on a mast under the board. Move it through water fast enough and it generates lift, exactly as an aircraft wing does in air. An eFoil adds an electric propeller so you can reach that speed without a wave, a boat or a kite.

The result is that the board leaves the surface entirely and you ride a foot or two above the water, with almost no noise and no wake. People describe it as flying, and that is genuinely the closest word.

It also means the two things that stop most beginners surfing — paddling fitness and reading waves — are simply not part of it.

What Oahu eFoil lessons cost

SessionPriceLengthBest for
Group experience$1491.5–2 hrsPairs and friends, lowest price
Solo mid-length$1991–1.5 hrsTrying it once
Solo full-length$2491.5–2 hrsActually learning to ride
Private lesson$260.101.5 hrsOne-to-one, safety kit specified

The group session is the value pick and still runs the same length as the longest solo option — you are trading instructor attention for $100, and on a foil, watching someone else make the mistakes first is genuinely useful.

Is $50 more for the longer solo lesson worth it?

Yes, if you want to leave able to ride rather than having simply tried it. Getting up on the foil is one skill; staying up and turning is a different one, and that is what the extra half hour buys.

The mid-length session at $199 is explicitly pitched at people who want to experience eFoiling. The full-length at $249 is pitched at people who want to get to grips with it in one go. Pick according to which of those you actually are.

Where you go and what is provided

Sessions run on Oahu’s South Shore. The private lesson meets at Ke’ehi South Beach, 1640 Sand Island Parkway, Honolulu, HI 96819; the solo and group sessions run from Sand Island. This is protected water rather than surf, which is the point — foiling wants flat.

The private lesson lists what is provided: life vest, helmet and whistle. It covers ocean safety procedures, eFoil-specific safety, board operation and respect for ocean resources. Instructors work with you on land first, then in the water.

How long does it take to learn to eFoil?

Most beginners get up and riding within their first session. Instruction starts on the beach, where you learn the handheld remote that controls your speed, and then moves into the water.

The usual progression has four stages: lying on the board to get used to the throttle, riding on your knees, standing with the board still on the surface, and finally adding enough speed for the foil to lift. Reaching that last stage is what a first lesson is for. Holding the board level once it is up, and turning while you are there, is what the longer sessions give you time to practise.

Are there age and weight limits for eFoil lessons?

Yes, and they differ by operator. The group and solo sessions at Sand Island take riders aged 10 and up, with a maximum weight of 200 lb; riders of 201 to 265 lb can take part for a $49 surcharge. The private lesson at Ke’ehi South Beach is for ages 16 and up. Previous watersport experience helps and is not required, and you do not need to be able to surf.

eFoil, foil surfing or wing foiling?

All three ride the same kind of hydrofoil. What differs is where the speed comes from. Foil surfing takes it from a wave, so you still have to paddle in and catch one. Wing foiling takes it from the wind, through a handheld inflatable wing. An eFoil takes it from a battery and a propeller, which is why it works on flat water with no wind, and why it is the one you can realistically learn in a single session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to be fit to eFoil?

Much less than for surfing. The board is powered, so there is no paddling and no waiting for waves. Operators describe their sessions as suitable for students of average fitness and age. Balance matters more than strength.

How much is an eFoil lesson on Oahu?

From $149 for a group session to $260.10 for a private lesson. Solo sessions are $199 for roughly 1 to 1.5 hours and $249 for 1.5 to 2 hours.

Will I actually get up on the foil first time?

Most people do. Instructors work through it on land before you get in the water, and the aim across these sessions is to have you flying within the first lesson. Riding smoothly and turning takes longer.

Is eFoiling safe?

It is taught with a life vest, helmet and whistle, and sessions include ocean and equipment safety before you ride. The foil itself is the thing to respect — it is a hard wing under the board, which is exactly why instructors cover falling technique first.

Can you eFoil if you cannot surf?

Yes, and it is often easier. Surfing requires reading waves, paddling and timing. eFoiling removes all three. Plenty of people who never managed to stand up in a surf lesson get up on a foil.

Where can you eFoil in Hawaii?

The eFoil sessions we list are all on Oahu’s South Shore, at Sand Island and Ke’ehi near Honolulu, a short drive from Waikiki. The water there is protected, which is what a foil needs.

Is there an age or weight limit for eFoiling?

The group and solo sessions at Sand Island take ages 10 and up, with a 200 lb maximum, or 201 to 265 lb for a $49 surcharge. The private lesson at Ke’ehi South Beach is for ages 16 and up.
