Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Kona is where most Big Island visitors sleep, and it is on the wrong side of the island for the volcano. That single fact shapes every itinerary here: the water is on your doorstep, the crater is a drive, and the best evening in Hawaii starts at a harbour ten minutes south of town.

Quick Answer: From Kona, the manta ray night snorkel is $139 and the sunset and manta combo $135. A group surf lesson at Kahalu’u Beach Park is $124, and boards rent from $20 for two hours. Volcano days from this side run $295.99 for an evening tour or elite hike, and $899.99 for a helicopter and ground combination. In winter, a whale watch and manta snorkel double bill is $219.

TL;DR

  • Unmissable: $139 manta ray night snorkel from Keauhou Harbor
  • Cheapest water day: $20 board rental, or $124 for a surf lesson
  • Volcano from Kona: $295.99 evening tour; $899.99 with a helicopter
  • Winter only: $219 whale watch and manta snorkel combo
  • Plan around: the drive — the volcano is a long way from your hotel

What Kona sells, by price

The mantas: the reason to be here after dark

Kona’s manta rays are residents, not migrants, which is why the sighting record here is unlike most wildlife tours. You float on an illuminated board while the animals barrel-roll through the plankton beneath you. Manta Magic is $139 for up to 40 minutes in the water from Keauhou Harbor, ages 7 and up, and the operator states that non-swimmers can take part on the light board.

The sunset and manta combo at $135 puts the golden hour ahead of it. In winter, the whale watch and manta combo at $219 covers both ends of the day. Full briefing in our manta ray guide.

Surfing at Kahalu’u

Kahalu’u Beach Park, on Ali’i Drive south of town, is the Big Island’s most reliable beginner bay and the base for every school. A group lesson is $124 with four students maximum, lifeguard-led private coaching is $195 one-to-one or $125 per person for a group of three or four, and Kona Mike’s run six start times a day from 7:00am.

Boards are cheap: foam from $20 for two hours, epoxy from $25, both with free roof racks on longer rentals. Mornings are cleaner before the trade winds build. The full picture is in surfing on the Big Island.

The volcano problem, and how to solve it

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is on the far side of the island from Kona. That is a long drive each way, which is why the tours from this side are full-day commitments rather than afternoon trips.

Three formats work. The evening volcano tour at $295.99 aims at crater glow after dark, which you cannot see on a morning tour — the case for it is in volcano tours after dark. The elite volcano hike at the same price walks into the caldera. The helicopter and ground tour at $899.99 flies the lava fields and then walks the park, and is explained in why both options include ground time.

Staying on the Hilo side instead changes the maths entirely; Kona or Hilo sets out which side to book from, and can you see lava right now covers what is currently visible.

Kilauea sits on the opposite side of the island from Kona, which is why every volcano tour here is a full day.

A three-day Kona plan that works

Day one: surf lesson at Kahalu’u in the morning ($124), beach afternoon, manta snorkel after dark ($139). The harbour is ten minutes from the lesson.

Day two: the volcano, as a full day. Evening tour ($295.99) if you want the glow, helicopter combination ($899.99) if the flight was already on the list.

Day three: the south coast — the Punalu’u black sand beach tour at $179 takes in turtles and craters, or rent a board for $20 and stay on this coast. What is worth booking on Hawaii Island covers the rest, and the Big Island luau guide handles the evenings. If you are staying up the Kohala Coast, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Sunset Luau on ’Anaeho’omalu Bay includes reserved seating and a full open bar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best thing to do in Kona?

The manta ray night snorkel, at $139 from Keauhou Harbor. The rays are resident rather than migratory, so sightings are unusually reliable, and non-swimmers can take part holding the light board.

How far is the volcano from Kona?

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is on the opposite side of the island, so tours from Kona run as full days. Evening tours and elite hikes are $295.99, and a helicopter and ground combination is $899.99.

Can you surf in Kona?

Yes, at Kahalu’u Beach Park. Group lessons are $124 for 90 minutes with four students maximum, private lifeguard-led lessons are $195, and boards rent from $20 for two hours.

When can you see whales in Kona?

In winter. The whale watch and manta ray snorkel combo at $219 runs in season and covers both in one day.

Is Kona or Hilo the better base for the Big Island?

Kona is drier, has the mantas and most of the hotels. Hilo is closer to the volcano and much wetter. Many visitors split the trip or accept a long drive from Kona.

How many days do you need in Kona?

Three works well: a water day, a volcano day and a south coast day. Fewer than that and the volcano day eats most of your trip.
