Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

The Big Island is not the island people picture when they think about learning to surf. It has less beginner coastline than Oahu or Maui, and its reputation is built on volcanoes rather than waves. But Kona has one very good learning bay, three schools teaching there, and prices clear enough to compare properly.

Quick Answer: Almost every Big Island surf lesson runs at Kahalu’u Beach Park on the Kona side. A group lesson capped at four students is $124 for 90 minutes (ages 10+). Hawaii Lifeguard Surf Instructors charge $195 for a two-hour one-to-one lesson, $295 for two people, or $125 per person for a private group of three or four. Kona Mike’s charge $169 per adult for a private group lesson with two adults required, or $210 for children 10 and under. Board rentals start at $20 for two hours in Kona and $40 for 24 hours in Hilo.

TL;DR

  • Where: Kahalu’u Bay in Kona, for nearly every lesson
  • Cheapest lesson: $124 group, four students per instructor, 90 minutes
  • Private: $195 one-to-one with a lifeguard coach, two hours
  • Families: $125 pp private group of 3–4, or $210 for kids 10 and under
  • Rentals: foam from $20, epoxy from $25 (two hours); Hilo $40 per 24 hours

Read the price basis carefully, because it is not consistent. The group lesson and HLSI’s private group are per person, the duo is a single price for two, and Kona Mike’s adult rate only applies when two adults book together.

One-to-one surf lesson with a lifeguard instructor at Kahaluu Bay, Kailua-Kona
Hawaii Lifeguard Surf Instructors pair every student with a lifeguard-qualified coach at Kahalu’u Bay.

Why almost everything happens at Kahalu’u Bay

Kahalu’u Beach Park, at 78-6702 Ali’i Drive south of Kailua-Kona, is the Big Island’s most reliable beginner bay, and the schools reflect that. The group lesson meets there, the lifeguard school teaches there, and the main rental shop, Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea, sits on the same stretch.

Mornings are generally cleaner, before the trade winds build. That is why the earliest slots fill first and why Kona Mike’s start their day at 7:00am.

Lifeguard instructors: what the extra money buys

The Hawaii Lifeguard Surf Instructors charge $195 for a one-to-one lesson, which is $71 more than the group lesson. For that you get a coach who is qualified as a lifeguard, the whole session to yourself, and two hours instead of 90 minutes.

The better deal is the VIP private group at $125 per person for three or four surfers. That is effectively the group-lesson price for a private session with your own family or friends. The duo, at $295 for two, works out at $147.50 each. For the wider trade-off, see private vs group surf lessons.

The $124 group lesson remains a sound first lesson: four students maximum, with boards, rash guards, water shoes and reef-safe sunscreen included. Towels are not, and cancellations need 48 hours’ notice.

Kona Mike’s: six start times a day

Kona Mike’s run the most flexible schedule on the coast: 7:00am, 8:45am, 10:30am, 12:15pm, 2:00pm and 3:45pm. The ohana lesson is a private group rather than a mixed class, at $169 per adult aged 11 and over, with two adults required. Children aged 10 and under book a $210 private lesson.

For a couple, the $169 rate is $45 more each than the group lesson but guarantees you are not sharing the instructor with strangers. For a family with a young child, compare the $210 private kids lesson with HLSI’s one-to-one lesson from age five at $195; our kids surf lesson age guide lists every island’s rules.

Renting a board in Kona or Hilo

Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea rent foam boards from 5ft to 11ft at $20 for two hours up to $110 a week, and epoxy boards at $25 for two hours up to $125 a week. Foam is the forgiving choice for beginners and improvers; epoxy suits surfers who already stand comfortably. Pickup runs 9am to 4pm with returns by 5pm, but the latest pickup is 2pm for a two-hour rental and noon for a four-hour one. Three-day and weekly rentals include free roof racks and board swaps.

On the east side, Hilo Ocean Adventures rent an 8ft foam board for $40 per 24 hours or $170 a week, with roof mount systems from $10, boogie boards and fins from $10, and life jackets free. It is a rare rental counter on the Hilo side. All rentals are priced per board, and a waiver and card deposit are required at pickup. Our surfboard rental guide covers which board length to ask for.

Fitting surf into a Big Island trip

The most efficient Kona day is a morning lesson at Kahalu’u and an evening manta ray night snorkel from Keauhou Harbor, a few minutes down the same coast. Volcano days are better kept separate: the park is a long drive from Kona, as our Kona vs Hilo volcano guide explains.

If surfing is the main reason for your trip, Oahu and Maui have far more choice; compare Oahu, Maui and Kauai. If it is one day among many, Kona is more than good enough. For everything else on the island, see what is worth booking on the Big Island.
