Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Stand-up paddleboarding is the watersport most visitors can genuinely do on their first day. Unlike surfing, you are not trying to stand on a moving wave; you are standing on a wide, stable board on flat water. This site sells seven ways to do it, from a $69 rental in Kailua to a two-hour private lesson in Lahaina, and they suit very different people.

Quick Answer: The cheapest way to stand-up paddle in Hawaii is a Kailua Beach Adventures SUP rental from $69. A two-hour group lesson in Waikiki with Hans Hedemann is $100, and a self-guided Kailua SUP tour that includes the state offshore islet landing permit is $99 for adults. On Maui, lessons are $150 per person in Kihei (90 minutes) and $175 in Lahaina (two hours). Minimum ages vary: 13 for the Waikiki private lesson, and children under 10 must book a private session in Lahaina.

TL;DR

  • Cheapest: $69 SUP rental, Kailua, Oahu
  • Best first lesson: $100 two-hour group lesson in Waikiki
  • Best unguided day: $99 self-guided Kailua tour with islet landing permit
  • Maui: $150 in Kihei (90 minutes) or $175 in Lahaina (2 hours)
  • Watch the ages: Waikiki private lesson is 13+; Lahaina under-10s must go private

Every price above is per person. The pattern is simple: Oahu has the cheap end of the market because Waikiki and Kailua both have large, calm, well-served stretches of water; Maui’s two lessons are private formats only, which is why they start at $150.

Maui’s SUP lessons are private to your party, which is why they start higher than Oahu’s group lessons.

Waikiki: the easiest water in Hawaii to learn on

The Hans Hedemann group lesson runs from the Queen Kapiolani Hotel end of Waikiki. At $100 for two hours it is the best-value way to learn properly: instructors teach balance, stroke and turning, and the operator describes it as an excellent core and cardio workout that needs minimal skill.

For one-to-one attention, Waikiki Beach Services run a 75-minute private lesson from the Royal Hawaiian at 2259 Kalakaua Avenue for $150. It is taught at beginner or advanced level, the minimum age is 13, and turtles are frequently seen over the reef. The advanced session is the unusual one: it covers catching and riding waves on a paddleboard.

If you want to see turtles from the water rather than the board, our Oahu snorkeling guide covers Turtle Canyon, a short boat ride from the same beach.

Kailua: paddle to the islands yourself

Kailua is where confident paddlers go to be left alone. The self-guided SUP tour at $99 (children $89) starts in the protected Ka’elepulu Stream, where the water is flat enough to practise, and then lets you cruise Kailua Bay, land on the offshore islands or surf seasonal waves.

What makes it more than a rental is the package: a 10’6” to 11’6” board, leash, paddle, a snorkel mask, a boogie board, a beach mat and the state DLNR offshore islet landing permit, which is what lets you legally step ashore on the islands. Every participant must be able to swim, and paddlers are asked to watch a safety video before they go.

If you would rather be guided, the $179 guided SUP tour takes you along the beach or out to Flat Island with an instructor. For a plain board, SUP rentals start at $69, with free carts to walk your board down or racks for your car. The crossing itself is covered in our Kailua kayaking guide, and the conditions apply equally to paddleboards.

Maui: Kihei and Lahaina

In South Maui, Maui Wave Riders run a 90-minute SUP lesson in Kihei at $150 per person, either one-to-one or semi-private for two to six people from your own party, so you never share an instructor with strangers. About 15 minutes of land instruction comes first, and the board, rash guard, reef shoes and safety fins are included. The operator recommends the private format for young children and nervous beginners.

On the west side, Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy teach a two-hour SUP lesson in Lahaina for $175, on sheltered west-facing water, with a long-sleeve UV rash guard and reef shoes supplied. Children under 10 must book a private session.

Both schools also teach surfing, which matters if your group is split between paddlers and surfers. See learning to surf on Maui for the surf side of the same beaches.

SUP lesson or surf lesson?

Book SUP if the goal is time on the water with the least frustration: flat water, a big board and a skill most adults pick up in one session. Book a surf lesson if the goal is riding a wave, and accept that standing up is harder. What actually happens in a first surf lesson explains why.

For a group that cannot agree, the Wai Kai wave pool sells a $164 surf, paddle and play bundle. And paddlers who find SUP too easy tend to graduate to eFoiling on Oahu’s south shore.

Before you paddle

Go early. Trade winds usually build through the day, and wind is the paddler’s real enemy: it is far harder to paddle back into a headwind than to paddle out with one behind you.

Wear the leash at all times, which every operator here requires, and use reef-safe sunscreen, which Hawaii state law requires. Basic swimming ability is recommended for lessons and required for the self-guided Kailua tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is stand-up paddleboarding hard to learn?

No. On flat water most adults are standing within a single lesson. The Waikiki group lesson is described by the operator as requiring minimal skill, and the Kailua self-guided tour starts on a calm stream so beginners can practise.

How much is a paddleboard lesson in Hawaii?

From $100 for a two-hour group lesson in Waikiki to $150 for a 75-minute private Waikiki lesson or a 90-minute Kihei lesson, and $175 for a two-hour lesson in Lahaina, Maui.

Can you rent a paddleboard without a lesson?

Yes. Kailua Beach Adventures rent SUPs from $69, and their $99 self-guided tour adds an islet landing permit, snorkel mask and boogie board. You need to be able to swim.

What is the minimum age for SUP lessons in Hawaii?

It varies by school. The private Waikiki lesson is ages 13 and up, Lahaina requires children under 10 to book a private session, and Kihei recommends private lessons for young children.

Where is the best place to paddleboard on Oahu?

Waikiki for lessons, because the water is calm and the schools are on the beach. Kailua for paddling on your own, with a protected stream to start and offshore islands to reach.

Do you need a permit to land on the Mokulua Islands?

Landing on offshore islets requires a state DLNR permit. The Kailua Beach Adventures self-guided SUP tour includes it in the $99 price.
