Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Most surf lessons sold in Hawaii are first lessons. They are designed to get you standing, and they are very good at it. What they are not designed to do is turn you into a surfer. That takes repetition, a coach who remembers what you did wrong yesterday, and waves chosen for your level rather than the nearest beginner break. It is a different product, and Hawaii sells several versions of it.

Quick Answer: For progression beyond a first lesson, Hawaii offers three formats. Multi-day camps: Waves Hawaii’s three-day camp at Kalama Park on Maui is $480 per person for two to five students or $660 private, and Go Nuts Hawaii’s North Shore camp on Oahu is $2,148 for three days or $4,295 for seven. Surf safaris on Maui, which go wherever the day’s best waves are, cost $475 to $500 for the first guest. Single advanced sessions include a Waikiki advanced lesson at $120, a Hanalei Bay coaching hour at $240 and a three-hour North Shore surf tour at $350.

TL;DR

  • Best value multi-day: $480 pp, three days of two-hour sessions, Kihei
  • Biggest commitment: North Shore camp, $2,148 for three days or $4,295 for seven
  • Chase the waves: Maui surf safaris, $475–$500 for the first guest
  • One advanced session: Waikiki $120, Hanalei $240, Po’okela $250
  • Reps without the ocean: Wai Kai 65-foot wave from $75

Price basis matters here more than anywhere. The camps and most lessons are per person, but the safaris charge a first-guest rate with a smaller supplement for each extra surfer, which makes them considerably better value for a group of three or four than for one.

The three-day camp: why it beats three separate lessons

Book three single lessons and you often get the same first lesson three times, with a different instructor starting from zero each morning. Waves Hawaii’s three-day camp at Kalama Park is designed the other way round: each day builds on the last, and rather than being pushed into waves for two hours, you work towards catching them yourself.

The numbers are persuasive. A single private lesson with the same school is $225. The private three-day camp is $660, which is $220 a day for three coached sessions with one instructor who knows your progress. Semi-private, at $480 per person for two to five students, it is $160 a day. Board, reef shoes and rash guard are provided, sessions meet at the Waves Hawaii truck in Kihei, and mornings are recommended for wind and conditions.

The North Shore camp: the biggest commitment on the site

Go Nuts Hawaii’s North Shore Surf Camp is a different scale of trip. It is based 0.6 miles from Sunset Beach, surfs spots including Velzyland, Sunset, Pipeline and Waimea according to your prior experience, and runs in three-day ($2,148) and seven-day ($4,295) formats. In December the same coast hosts the Triple Crown contests at Haleiwa, Sunset and Pipeline.

Be honest about your level before booking. North Shore winter surf is serious enough that swimming there becomes spectator-only, and the camp is aimed at surfers who want to live at the pace of that coast. Beginners are better served by the south shore; see Waikiki or the North Shore.

Surf safaris: letting the coach choose the beach

A normal lesson happens at a fixed time on a fixed beginner break, whatever the conditions. A surf safari reverses that: the location is decided on the day, from conditions across Maui, so you surf the best available wave for your level.

The Royal Hawaiian Surfari is $475 for four hours or $675 for six to eight, plus $125 for each extra guest, with boards, UV rash guards, reef shoes, beach chairs and snacks supplied; children under nine must book private, and groups of six or more should call. The Private Surf Safari is $500 for four hours plus a Hawaiian-style lunch, with instructors from the professional circuit who assess conditions in the days before your trip, and it takes all levels from age five.

Single advanced sessions

If a camp is too much, a single coaching session aimed at your level is the next best thing. In Waikiki, Ohana Surf Project’s advanced lesson is $120 for two hours. Po’okela’s private intermediate and advanced lesson is $250 and focuses on wave reading and technique.

On Kauai, Aloha Surfing School’s elite lesson at Hanalei Bay is coaching, not a demo: an hour of real-time feedback on pop-up mechanics, wave selection and turns, from the school owner or an elite instructor, for $240. It is for intermediate to advanced surfers only. On the North Shore, the $350 surf tour starts with surf checks at several breaks and surfs whichever suits the swell and your ability, on shortboard or longboard.

For pure repetition, the Wai Kai 65-foot wave gives you the same wave again and again from $75.

How to tell you are ready to move on

You are past first-lesson territory when you can paddle into a whitewater wave and stand without an instructor pushing you, and when you can get back out through small surf on your own. At that point another beginner lesson teaches you little.

Between coached sessions, renting a board and practising alone is the cheapest progress there is; our surfboard rental guide covers what to rent. If you are still weighing formats, private vs group lessons explains why one-to-one coaching speeds things up, and your first surf lesson covers the stage before this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

A short progression camp can be. The Kalama Park three-day camp is built around your starting level, with each day building on the last, and costs less per day than repeated private lessons. The North Shore camp is aimed at experienced surfers.

What is a surf safari on Maui?

A private surfing excursion where the beach is chosen on the day from conditions across the island. Royal Hawaiian’s is $475 for four hours; the Private Surf Safari is $500 for four hours with lunch.

Where can intermediate surfers get lessons in Hawaii?

Waikiki advanced lessons are $120, Po’okela’s private intermediate and advanced lesson on Oahu is $250, a three-hour North Shore surf tour is $350, and Hanalei Bay on Kauai has a $240 elite coaching hour.

How do I know I am ready for advanced surf lessons?

When you can paddle into whitewater waves and stand without being pushed, and get back out through small surf on your own. At that point a beginner lesson teaches you little.
