Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.
Hawaii has surf every day of the year, but not on every coast. The islands sit in the middle of the Pacific and take swell from opposite directions in opposite seasons, which is why one side of Oahu can be flat while the other is closed out. Getting this right decides whether your lesson happens at all.
Quick Answer: In Hawaii, north-facing shores get the big swells from roughly October to March, and south-facing shores get smaller, softer swells from about April to September. Beginners should book south-shore breaks such as Waikiki, Kalama Park in Kihei and Poβipu on Kauai in winter, and can add north-shore spots such as Haleiwa and Hanalei in summer. Lessons cost $89 to $124 year-round, and the wave pool at Wai Kai runs regardless of swell.
TL;DR
- Winter (OctβMar): north shores big; learn on south shores
- Summer (AprβSep): south shores gentle; north shores calm enough to learn
- Always works: Waikiki, the most forgiving beginner water in Hawaii
- Weather-proof: Wai Kai wave pool on Oahu, from $75
- Price is flat: lessons are $89β$124 regardless of season
Which shore in which season
| Season | Works for beginners | Big-wave coasts to watch, not surf |
|---|---|---|
| October to March | Waikiki (Oahu), Kalama Park and Ukumehame (Maui), Poβipu (Kauai), Kahaluβu (Big Island) | North Shore Oahu: Waimea, Sunset, Pipeline; Hanalei Bay, Kauai |
| April to September | All of the above, plus Haleiwa on the North Shore | South-shore swells occasionally build; ask your school |
The rule of thumb that locals use is simple: in winter you surf town, in summer you surf country. βTownβ on Oahu means the south shore around Waikiki; βcountryβ means the North Shore.
Winter: the famous waves, and where not to be
From roughly October to March, north swells reach the islands and the North Shore of Oahu becomes the centre of professional surfing β the Triple Crown contests at Haleiwa, Sunset and Pipeline run in December. Our circle island operators state it plainly: in winter, North Shore swimming is spectator-only.
That does not cancel your lesson; it moves it. Waikiki lessons at $100 for two hours run through the winter, because the south shore is sheltered from north swell. On Maui, the Kalama Park group lesson at $99 and the quieter Ukumehame family lesson at $120 do the same job. On Kauai, Poβipu at $89 is the south-shore answer while Hanalei is firing.
Winter is also whale season, which is why the boats and the surf schools share the same calendar β see the whale watching guide.

Summer: the whole island opens up
From about April to September the north swells stop and the North Shore turns into a swimming pool. This is when Haleiwa lessons at $90 make sense, when the catamaran sails run off Haleiwa at $79, and when snorkeling on that coast is worth doing at all.
South shores get their own summer swells, generated far to the south, which is what produces the long, soft walls at Waikiki that beginners love. They are smaller than the winter north swells by an order of magnitude, and they are the reason Waikiki works year-round. Full picture in the North Shore guide and Waikiki or the North Shore.
If you only have one week
Book the lesson early in your trip, not late. Conditions change daily, and an early booking leaves room to reschedule if your day is blown out. Mornings are consistently better than afternoons, because trade winds build through the day β every school we sell recommends the first slots, and Kona Mikeβs start at 7:00am for that reason.
If the ocean will not cooperate at all, the Wai Kai wave pool on Oahu makes its own waves: $149 for a 45-minute first-timer session, or from $75 on the 65-foot wave for proficient surfers. It is the only surf in Hawaii that does not care about swell.

Prices do not move with the seasons
Unlike hotels, surf lessons cost the same in February as in July. Group lessons run $89 at Poβipu, $90 in Haleiwa and on Kauai, $99 at Kalama Park, $100 in Waikiki and $124 at Kahaluβu. Private coaching is $150 to $250 everywhere. Boards rent from $8 on the North Shore and $20 in Kona.
What does change is availability. Winter fills the south shore schools and summer fills the north. Private vs group lessons explains which format to spend on, minimum ages covers children, and surf camps and coaching covers what comes after the first wave.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time of year to surf in Hawaii?
It depends on the coast. North-facing shores get big swells from October to March; south-facing shores get gentler waves from April to September. Beginners can surf the south shores year-round.
Can beginners surf in Hawaii in winter?
Yes, on south-facing shores. Waikiki, Kalama Park on Maui, Poβipu on Kauai and Kahaluβu in Kona all run beginner lessons through the winter while the North Shore is too big.
When is the North Shore of Oahu flat enough to learn on?
Roughly April to September. In those months Haleiwa lessons at $90 and the catamaran sails off that coast run comfortably.
Does surfing cost more in peak season in Hawaii?
No. Lessons are $89 to $124 for group formats year-round, and boards rent from $8. What changes seasonally is availability, not price.
What time of day is best for a surf lesson?
Morning. Trade winds build through the day and chop the surface, which is why schools recommend early slots and some start as early as 7:00am.
What if the surf is too big or too small on my day?
Book early in your trip so you can move the booking, or use the Wai Kai wave pool on Oahu, which generates its own waves from $75 and is unaffected by swell.
