Hawaiian Activities — island tours, luaus, and adventures across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

The North Shore is an hour from Waikiki and a different ocean. In summer it is flat enough to learn on and clear enough to snorkel. In winter it produces the waves the world watches, and the same beaches become somewhere to stand and look. Booking well here means knowing which season you have arrived in.

Quick Answer: On Oahu’s North Shore, a surfboard rental is $8, the cheapest on the island. A two-hour surf lesson in Haleiwa is $90, private one-to-one coaching runs $225 to $239, and a three-day surf camp is $2,148. On the water, a catamaran sail is $79, a sail and snorkel $139, and a guided turtle kayak tour $140. In winter, big swell closes the beginner surf and the snorkel boats, and the coast becomes a spectator sport.

TL;DR

  • Cheapest board: $8 surfboard rental, the lowest price on Oahu
  • Best beginner lesson: $90 two hours in Haleiwa with Surf N Sea
  • Best boat: $79 catamaran sail, or $139 with snorkeling
  • Wildlife: $140 guided turtle kayak tour
  • Season rule: summer to swim and learn; winter to watch

Summer and winter are two different coasts

From roughly April to September the North Shore is calm. That is when the beginner lessons run comfortably, the catamarans sail off Haleiwa, and snorkeling works. From October to March the north swells arrive, and the same water becomes the arena for the Triple Crown contests at Haleiwa, Sunset and Pipeline in December.

Our circle island operators put it bluntly: in winter, North Shore swimming is spectator-only. That does not make a winter visit pointless — watching Waimea or Pipeline on a big day is one of the best free things to do in Hawaii — but it does mean booking your surf lesson on the south shore instead. When to surf in Hawaii sets out the swell calendar.

Learning to surf here, and what it costs

Surf N Sea in Haleiwa teach a two-hour lesson for $90, the best value on the coast, and welcome children who can swim when a parent comes along. Private coaching runs from $225 at Chun’s Reef to $239 with Go Nuts Hawaii, and groups of three to five pay $115 each for a private group lesson.

Young children go tandem: the keiki tandem lesson at Chun’s Reef is $200 for 90 minutes with the instructor riding alongside. Every school’s age limit is listed in minimum ages for kids surf lessons.

Surfers past the first lesson have the best choice on the island: a three-hour surf tour at $350 that checks several breaks before picking one, or the Go Nuts surf camp at $2,148 for three days. Both are covered in surf camps and coaching. Renting instead? Boards are $8 here — see the rental guide.

Boats, turtles and waterfalls

The $79 catamaran sail is the cheapest boat on Oahu, and the morning sail and snorkel adds four hours in the water for $139; the afternoon version is the same price for three hours. For the whole boat, the private charter runs $1,200 and looks at Pipeline and Waimea from the water.

On land, the nature and turtle kayak tour is $140, and Laniakea Beach is where green turtles haul out on the sand — they are wild animals, so sightings are luck, not schedule. Read where to swim with sea turtles before planning around them. Inland, the private Waimea Falls tour is $850 for a group.

Getting there without renting a car

Every circle island tour on Oahu comes up this coast. The AllStar tour is $79 for nine hours, the Grand Circle Island and Dole Plantation $179 for ten or eleven, and the Ultimate tour from Ko Olina $165. They stop at the surf beaches, the shrimp trucks at Kahuku and Haleiwa town.

The trade-off is time: you see the coast, but you do not surf it. If the North Shore is the point of your trip, stay up here. If it is one day of seven, take the coach. Seeing Oahu without a car compares the options, and things to do in Waikiki covers the other end of the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the North Shore of Oahu worth visiting in winter?

Yes, to watch. Winter swell makes the beaches spectator-only for swimming and surfing at beginner level, but it produces the waves the North Shore is famous for, including the December Triple Crown contests.

How much is a surf lesson on the North Shore?

$90 for two hours in Haleiwa with Surf N Sea, $95 to $120 per person for group formats, and $225 to $239 for private one-to-one coaching. A three-day camp is $2,148.

Where can you see turtles on the North Shore?

Laniakea Beach, where green sea turtles rest on the sand, and on the guided nature and turtle kayak tour at $140. Sightings are wild and not guaranteed, and Hawaii law requires keeping your distance.

How far is the North Shore from Waikiki?

About an hour by car each way. Circle island coach tours from Waikiki cover it as part of a nine to eleven hour day, from $79.

What is the cheapest thing to do on the North Shore?

A surfboard rental at $8, the cheapest board rental on Oahu, followed by the $79 catamaran sail off Haleiwa.

Can beginners surf at Waimea Bay or Pipeline?

No. Those are advanced winter breaks. Beginners learn at Haleiwa in summer or on the south shore in Waikiki year-round.
